Delaware Registration Renewal

Delaware vehicle registration is renewed every 1 or 2 years through the Delaware DMV. Newer vehicles (less than 5 model years old) are on a 2-year cycle; older vehicles return annually. Most renewals can be completed online through the MyDMV portal as long as the vehicle's safety inspection is current. When an inspection is due, the renewal happens at the DMV lane itself — Delaware is one of the few states that does inspection on the same trip as renewal.

When to renew

Delaware registrations expire on the last day of the month shown on the rear plate sticker, which is set at first registration and follows either a 12-month or 24-month cycle. The Delaware DMV mails a renewal notice roughly 45 days before expiration to the address on file. Driving with expired tags is a citable offense and triggers a late-fee penalty on the renewal. The DMV allows renewals up to 90 days early without losing time off the new cycle.

What you need to renew

Before submitting the renewal — online, by mail, or in person — you'll need:

  • The renewal notice or your current registration card showing the registration number.
  • A current Delaware safety inspection certificate on file with the DMV (the inspection has to be valid for the entire upcoming cycle, or you'll need to inspect at the lane during renewal).
  • Proof of active Delaware no-fault insurance meeting the 25/50/10 + $15,000 PIP minimums; the MyDMV portal verifies electronically with the insurer.
  • A valid Delaware driver's license for the registered owner.
  • Payment of the renewal fee (typically $40 for passenger cars).

Online renewal through MyDMV

Most Delaware drivers renew online through the MyDMV portal at the Delaware DMV website. Eligible drivers complete the renewal in less than five minutes; the new sticker is mailed to the address on file within 5-10 business days. You can renew online if:

  • The vehicle's safety inspection is current and on file.
  • The vehicle is on a 2-year cycle and not yet due for inspection this cycle.
  • The address on file is correct.
  • The insurance is current with a Delaware-admitted carrier.
  • There are no outstanding tickets, suspensions, or holds on the vehicle.

In-person renewal at the DMV lane

If your vehicle's safety inspection is due, you'll renew in person at any of Delaware's four DMV offices — Wilmington, New Castle, Dover, or Georgetown. The DMV lane handles inspection, payment, and sticker issuance in one visit, typically 20-45 minutes depending on lane volume. The inspection adds no separate fee on top of the renewal; it's bundled into the registration cost.

Renewal fees

Delaware's renewal fee is approximately $40 per year for passenger cars and light trucks under 5,000 pounds. Heavier vehicles, RVs, and commercial vehicles pay a weight-based step-up. There is no Document Fee at renewal — the 3.75% Document Fee is only collected at first registration and title transfer (see Delaware vehicle registration). Specialty plates carry a small annual surcharge.

Annual safety inspection

The Delaware safety inspection is a key difference between Delaware's renewal and most mainland states' renewals. Vehicles less than 5 model years old are inspected every 2 years; vehicles 5 model years or older are inspected annually at renewal. The inspection is done at the DMV lane itself and covers brakes, lights, signals, tires, wipers, windshield, exhaust, horn, mirrors, and emergency brake. Failed vehicles get a 30-day repair window before re-inspection. Delaware does not do a separate emissions test for passenger vehicles in most counties.

Late renewals

A late Delaware registration renewal triggers a late-fee penalty added to the standard fees. If the registration has lapsed for more than 6 months, the vehicle may have to be re-titled at the DMV counter rather than simply renewed, which adds a title fee on top of the registration fees. Driving on expired tags is also a citable offense, so renew on time or stop driving the vehicle until the renewal is complete.

Out-of-state arrivals

New residents arriving in Delaware do not "renew" — they newly register, even if their out-of-state registration is current. See Delaware car registration for the title and registration process for vehicles brought from other states. The Delaware safety inspection is performed at the registration lane.
