Florida Address & Name Change

Florida requires drivers to update the address on their driver license within 10 days of a move under FS §322.19, and to update vehicle registration along with it. Name changes after a marriage, divorce, or court order require an in-person Tax Collector visit with the supporting court document. Both updates flow through Florida's GoRenew and MyDMV portals — but only the address change can be completed online.

Address change on a Florida driver license

The address on your Florida driver license can be updated three ways:

  • Online through GoRenew.com or the MyDMV Portal — free for an electronic record update; $25 if you also want a new printed card with the corrected address. The change posts to FLHSMV records immediately.
  • By mail using HSMV 73020 (Notification to FLHSMV of Address Change) — free for the record update.
  • In person at any Tax Collector office — $25 fee for an updated card; the new card is printed at the counter on the same visit.

Florida treats the electronic record update as the official address change; the card itself shows the old address until the next renewal cycle, but law enforcement queries the FLHSMV electronic record for the current address.

Address change on Florida vehicle registration

Florida automatically forwards address updates from the driver license record to the vehicle registration when you change the license address. If you don't hold a Florida driver license but own a registered Florida vehicle (military, foreign national), update the registration address through the Tax Collector's local portal or a counter visit using HSMV 82040 with the new address. There is no fee for an electronic registration address update; a printed corrected card costs $2.50.

Name change on a Florida driver license

A Florida name change requires an in-person visit to a Tax Collector office. Online and mail updates are not allowed. You'll bring:

  • A government-issued document showing the new name — certified marriage license, divorce decree restoring a maiden name, or court order of name change.
  • Your current Florida driver license.
  • Proof of identity, citizenship, SSN, and Florida residency, the same checklist used for a new Florida driver license.
  • The $25 update fee (free if you're already inside your renewal window — see Florida license renewal).

The Tax Collector reissues the card with the new name on the spot. The 8-year cycle expiration date does not change with a name update.

Name change on Florida vehicle records

For FLHSMV records — vehicle title and registration — submit HSMV 82040 at the Tax Collector along with a copy of the same court-issued name change document. There is no transfer fee for a self-directed name change on a title you already hold; the Tax Collector updates the registration card for $2.50 and reissues an electronic title with the new name. A printed paper title with the new name is $2.50 additional.

Federal REAL ID consideration

Every Florida driver license issued since 2010 is REAL ID-compliant. The new card after a name change must continue to comply, which means presenting full identity, citizenship, SSN, and residency documents at the Tax Collector visit, not just the marriage license. Florida does not issue non-compliant cards, so this requirement is automatic.

Voter registration

The GoRenew and MyDMV address change transactions also forward your new address to the Florida Division of Elections for voter registration purposes. If you don't want your voter registration updated, you can opt out during the online or in-person transaction. Voter registration follows the residence address — not the mailing address — for jurisdictional purposes.

Insurance update

Don't forget to update your Florida auto insurance with the new address — Florida insurers rate by ZIP code, and a move from Tampa to St. Petersburg or from Miami-Dade to Broward can shift the rate up or down 15-30%. Your insurer also needs the corrected name to keep verification clean at registration renewal.

10-day deadline

Florida law gives drivers 10 days to update their license address after a move. A driver license suspension is rare for a first violation — most enforcement happens at a traffic stop where the officer notices the address mismatch and issues a warning or a low-level citation. But the 10-day rule still matters for vehicle registration, since the next renewal notice goes to the address on file with FLHSMV, and a missed renewal can trigger an entirely separate suspension.

Out-of-state moves

If you're moving out of Florida, you don't need to formally surrender the Florida license — your new state's licensing agency will report the new license to FLHSMV through the Driver License Compact, and Florida will mark the license as superseded. You should still cancel the Florida vehicle registration and any FR-44 or SR-22 filing before the move date.
