Other Florida Vehicle Registrations
Florida titles and registers a wide variety of vehicles beyond the standard passenger car. The rules differ for trailers, motorcycles, mopeds, RVs, off-highway vehicles, and antique tags — and Florida's permanent trailer tag for trailers under 2,000 pounds is a state-specific feature most other states don't offer.
Trailers under 2,000 pounds
Florida allows trailers with a net weight under 2,000 pounds to register with a permanent tag. The owner pays a one-time fee at the first registration; the tag never expires and never needs annual renewal. The fee is roughly $34 plus a $77.25 title fee on the first registration. The tag must be transferred to the new owner if the trailer is sold, but the permanent status carries over. This is one of the friendliest trailer registration regimes in the country.
Trailers between 2,000 and 5,000 pounds carry an annual registration that scales with weight, ranging from $35.60 to $52.10. Trailers over 5,000 pounds register as semi-trailers and may require commercial registration depending on use.
Motorcycles
Florida motorcycles are titled and registered like passenger vehicles, with two extra requirements:
- The rider must hold a Class E license with motorcycle endorsement, or a separate Motorcycle Only license.
- Florida requires completion of the Basic RiderCourse (BRC) through a state-approved Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) provider before any motorcycle endorsement. The BRC is about 15 hours of classroom and range work.
Motorcycle registration fees are around $25-$40 per year plus the standard $77.25 title fee at first registration. Florida helmet law requires riders under 21 to wear helmets always; riders 21 and older may opt out if they carry $10,000 in medical insurance — but most insurers strongly recommend the helmet anyway.
Mopeds and motor scooters
Florida defines a moped as a vehicle with no more than 50cc displacement, max 30 mph, and pedals (or step-through frame for some models). Mopeds register with a small-class plate at $20 annual, and the operator must have a Class E driver license but does not need a motorcycle endorsement. Motor scooters above 50cc are titled and registered like motorcycles and require the motorcycle endorsement.
Recreational vehicles
Florida motorhomes register through the Tax Collector with the same HSMV 82040 process as a passenger vehicle. Florida charges registration based on net weight, putting most Class A coaches over 6,000 pounds in the $46-$110 annual range. Class B and Class C motorhomes generally fall in the standard 3,500+ lb passenger registration tier ($46.15). Travel trailers register under the trailer rules above.
Antique vehicles
Florida issues antique vehicle plates for vehicles 30 years old or older used for "antique vehicle activity" — exhibition, parades, club events, and limited pleasure driving. Annual registration is approximately $7.50 plus a $4 antique vehicle plate fee. The antique plate restricts general daily driving; vehicles used as everyday drivers should register with standard plates instead.
Off-highway vehicles
ATVs, UTVs, side-by-sides, and dirt bikes used off-road only in Florida are titled (recommended for theft recovery and resale) but not registered for road use. Florida does not require a separate OHV decal as some other states do. Some OHVs can be converted to street use with a Tax Collector inspection and headlight, mirrors, horn, and turn-signal additions; the converted vehicle is registered like a motorcycle.
Mobile homes
Florida titles and registers mobile homes through FLHSMV. A mobile home permanently affixed to land may be combined with the real estate (real property declaration via DR-402) and removed from the FLHSMV registration system. Mobile homes that remain personal property carry an annual sticker — typically $20-$80 depending on size — and use the same Tax Collector renewal workflow as a vehicle.
Salvage and rebuilt titles
A vehicle declared a total loss by a Florida insurance carrier is branded Salvage. To return the vehicle to the road after repair, the owner files for a Rebuilt title after a state-authorized inspection. The rebuilt brand stays on the title permanently, but the vehicle can be registered, insured under standard PIP/PDL minimums, and driven the same as any other.
Out-of-state and military
New Florida residents transferring out-of-state vehicles use the standard HSMV 82040 process plus the $225 Initial Registration Fee if they have not previously held a Florida tag — see Florida title transfer. Active-duty military stationed in Florida can keep registration in their home-of-record state under the federal Servicemembers Civil Relief Act.
