Georgia Trailers, Motorcycles & Specialty Registrations

Beyond passenger cars, Georgia's MVD registers trailers, motorcycles, RVs, antique vehicles, and farm-use vehicles. Most of these use the same MV-1 form as a passenger car, but TAVT calculations and registration fees vary widely. Here's the practical breakdown.

Motorcycles

Georgia requires a Class M endorsement on the rider's driver's license (or a Class MP motorcycle permit) plus a separate motorcycle title and registration. Motorcycle TAVT is the same 7% as passenger cars. The annual registration fee is $20. Riders under 18 must complete a Motorcycle Safety Foundation course before any Class M road test, and Georgia waives the road test for completion of an MSF Basic RiderCourse.

Trailers

Georgia divides trailers into utility/cargo and travel trailer categories:

  • Trailers under 3,500 lbs gross weight: $12 annual registration. Title required only if used as security on a loan.
  • Trailers 3,501-6,000 lbs: $24 annual registration; title required.
  • Trailers 6,001-12,000 lbs: $36 annual registration.
  • Trailers 12,001+ lbs: commercial registration, fee scaled by weight.
  • Travel trailers: $48 annual registration regardless of weight, plus 7% TAVT at title.

Utility trailers under 3,500 lbs are issued a registration only — no title — but display a permanent plate. Trailers above the threshold use the standard MV-1 title application and pay TAVT on fair market value.

RVs and motor homes

Class A, B, and C motor homes register as motor vehicles with annual fees that scale by gross weight. A typical Class A motor home pays $78 to $200 annual registration. RVs pay the standard 7% TAVT at title; older RVs use the state's published fair market value table. Towed travel trailers register separately with their own plate and fee. RV conversions (skoolies, custom builds) require a Form T-22B State Patrol inspection before titling and may receive a "rebuilt" or "homemade" title designation.

Antique and historic vehicles

Georgia issues a year-of-manufacture plate option for vehicles 25 years or older that the owner intends to use primarily for exhibitions, club activities, parades, and similar limited use. The fee is $25 every 5 years instead of the annual $20. The vehicle owner must locate an authentic Georgia plate from the model year matching the vehicle, submit a Form MV-PYOM, and pass an MVD authentication review. Vintage plates can be sourced from estate sales, online vintage-plate marketplaces, or other collectors.

Farm-use vehicles

Georgia issues a Farm Vehicle registration for trucks and trailers used exclusively in farming. The fee is reduced ($12 for trucks under 14,000 lbs, scaled up by weight) and the vehicle is restricted to within 150 miles of the farm. Farm vehicles can carry only farm products, supplies, and family members; commercial use voids the farm registration. The owner certifies on Form MV-1 that the vehicle qualifies under the farm-use definition.

Off-highway vehicles (OHVs)

ATVs, dirt bikes, and side-by-sides do not register with MVD. Georgia does not require ATV registration in most cases, though some private trail systems require permits. ATVs cannot be operated on public roads except for limited circumstances (farm or hunting use under specific conditions); riders should check city and county ordinances.

Salvage and rebuilt titles

A vehicle declared a total loss by an insurance company receives a Georgia salvage title via the standard MV-1 marked "salvage." To return the vehicle to the road:

  • Complete repairs.
  • Pass a Georgia State Patrol salvage inspection (Form T-22B).
  • Apply for a Rebuilt title using MV-1 with supporting receipts and the T-22B.
  • Pay the $18 title fee plus 7% TAVT on the rebuilt vehicle's fair market value.

The rebuilt designation stays on the title permanently — Georgia does not "wash" salvage titles back to clean.

Commercial and intrastate trucks

Commercial trucks 26,001+ lbs require a Georgia CDL and additional registration through the International Registration Plan (IRP) for interstate operation. Intrastate-only commercial trucks register with MVD using Form MV-1 plus the truck weight schedule. Federal motor carrier rules apply on top of state registration.
