Renewing a Hawaii Driver's License

A standard Hawaii driver's license is valid for 8 years for adults age 25 to 71. Drivers under 25 and drivers 72 and older receive a 4-year cycle. Renewal is handled by your county licensing office — Honolulu, Hawaii, Maui, or Kauai — and the rules are uniform statewide even though the offices and appointment systems vary.

When to renew

Hawaii mails a courtesy renewal reminder to the address on file roughly 60 days before the expiration date. The license expires on the holder's birthday in the expiration year shown on the card. Driving with an expired license is a citable offense, and Hawaii law enforcement officers do enforce it, so set a calendar reminder if you don't trust the postcard to arrive. A Hawaii license can be renewed up to 6 months before the expiration date without losing time off the new cycle.

Renewal options

Most Hawaii counties allow online renewal for drivers who meet the eligibility criteria:

  • The current license is REAL ID-compliant (gold star in the upper right of the card).
  • The driver is between the ages of 25 and 71.
  • The driver does not have a vision restriction that requires a fresh screening.
  • The driver was issued the current license in person within the last cycle (most renewals require an in-person visit at least every other cycle to refresh the photo).
  • The driver does not have any change of name, address, or significant medical condition.

If you do not meet those criteria, you renew in person at your county licensing office. First-time REAL ID upgrades, name changes after marriage or divorce, vision exam updates, and any cycle following an out-of-state move all require an in-person visit.

Documents for in-person renewal

If you're renewing in person — particularly if your current license is not yet REAL ID — bring the same federal document set used for a first-time Hawaii driver's license:

  • One identity document (certified U.S. birth certificate or U.S. passport).
  • Proof of Social Security number (Social Security card, W-2, or SSA-1099).
  • Two proofs of Hawaii residency dated within the last 60 days.
  • Marriage certificate or divorce decree if your name has changed.
  • Your current driver's license (or expired license, if within the grace period).

Vision and medical screening

Every in-person renewal includes a vision screening at the county counter. The standard is 20/40 corrected, with a 140-degree field of vision. Drivers who fail the vision screening receive a referral to an optometrist or ophthalmologist for a Statement of Visual Examination, which the county will accept for issuance with a corrective-lens restriction code. Drivers 72 and older are screened at every renewal as part of the shorter 4-year cycle.

Renewal fees

Hawaii renewal fees vary by county but generally fall in the $5 to $40 range depending on cycle length and county fee schedule. The Honolulu standard 8-year renewal runs roughly $40, with neighbor-island counties at similar amounts. Senior drivers and under-25 drivers pay a prorated 4-year fee. Most county offices accept cash, check, debit, and credit; some satellite city halls accept cash only.

Late renewals

A Hawaii license can be renewed up to 90 days after expiration without retesting. Beyond 90 days, the county may require the driver to retake the knowledge test, the road test, or both. If the license has been expired for more than a year, full retesting is automatic, and the driver may need a temporary instruction permit during the testing period.

Active military and out-of-state residents

Hawaii residents on active military duty stationed outside Hawaii can usually renew by mail or online with proof of military status. Spouses of active-duty members are typically extended the same accommodation. The Hawaii license remains valid during deployment as long as the holder is in compliance with federal license-protection statutes. See Hawaii address and name change for the procedure to update the address on file before renewing.
