Kentucky Driver License Renewal

Kentucky lets you choose between a 4-year and an 8-year license cycle at every renewal. Most renewals happen in person at the county circuit court clerk's office in your county of residence — Kentucky's three-agency licensing model means renewals can't be handled at a generic DMV branch the way they can in single-agency states.

When to renew

Your Kentucky license expires on your birthday in the year shown on the front of the card. The KYTC mails a renewal notice about 60 days before expiration to the address on file. If you didn't get one, the most common reason is a stale address — see Kentucky address change for the update process. You can renew up to 6 months before expiration without losing time on the new card. After expiration, Kentucky allows a 1-year grace period during which the license can still be renewed at the standard fee plus a small late charge; after 1 year, the driver may have to retest.

4-year vs. 8-year cycle

Kentucky's cycle choice gives drivers a real decision at every renewal:

  • 4-year standard: $43 — about $10.75 per year.
  • 4-year REAL ID: $48.
  • 8-year standard: $81 — about $10.13 per year.
  • 8-year REAL ID: $96.

The 8-year cycle is fractionally cheaper per year, requires only one renewal trip every 8 years, and is the default for adult drivers. The 4-year cycle is sometimes preferred by younger drivers because Kentucky issues vertical licenses to drivers under 21 and horizontal licenses to drivers 21+; a 4-year cycle that ends near age 21 can time a card change to that birthday.

In-person renewal at the county clerk

Most Kentucky renewals happen in person. Bring:

  • Your current Kentucky license (the clerk surrenders it on issuance of the new one).
  • Proof of identity, Social Security number, and Kentucky residency if you're upgrading to a REAL ID for the first time.
  • A check, cash, or card for the renewal fee.

The clerk runs a vision screening (20/40 corrected) and takes a fresh photo at every renewal. The new permanent card is mailed by the central KYTC card production facility within 10-15 business days, and the driver receives a paper temporary credential to use during the wait.

Online renewal

Kentucky's online renewal portal is available for adult drivers who:

  • Have a current REAL ID-compliant license.
  • Aren't due for an in-person cycle (Kentucky requires an in-person renewal every other cycle for a fresh photo and vision screening).
  • Aren't changing name, address to a different county, or any data on the license.
  • Have no outstanding suspensions, holds, or court-ordered restrictions.

The online flow handles identity verification, payment, and address confirmation. The new card is mailed within 10-15 business days. The fee matches in-person renewal.

REAL ID upgrades

Kentucky has been issuing REAL ID-compliant cards since 2019. Federal law requires REAL ID for boarding domestic flights and entering federal facilities. To upgrade for the first time, you must visit a county circuit court clerk's office in person with the same identity, residency, and Social Security documentation required for a first-time license. The REAL ID upgrade adds $5 to the standard renewal fee. After the first REAL ID upgrade, subsequent renewals can usually be done online (subject to the every-other-cycle in-person rule).

Senior renewals

Kentucky doesn't impose a special senior renewal cycle. Drivers 70+ renew on the same 4-year or 8-year cycle as everyone else. The county clerk runs the standard vision screening at every in-person renewal and can refer the driver to KYTC's Medical Review Board if there's a question about fitness to drive. Family members or physicians can submit a request for re-examination to KYTC if there's a safety concern between renewal cycles.

If your license is suspended

You can't renew a Kentucky license that's currently suspended or revoked. Clear the suspension first by following the steps on the Kentucky suspended license page, including any reinstatement fee, SR-22 filing, and IID requirement. Once KYTC confirms eligibility, you can renew online or in person depending on which route you qualify for. While suspended, your vehicle registration is unaffected unless the underlying offense also triggered a registration hold.

Mail renewal for out-of-state Kentuckians

Kentucky drivers stationed overseas with the U.S. military, working temporarily out of state, or attending college in another state can renew by mail. Submit a written request to the KYTC's central licensing office at least 60 days before expiration, along with proof of out-of-state status, a passport-style photo, and a statement of intent to return to Kentucky. KYTC issues a one-time mail-renewal extension valid for the standard cycle.
