Louisiana Driver License Renewal
Louisiana licenses run on a 6-year cycle for drivers between 25 and 69 and a 4-year cycle for drivers under 25 or 70 and older. Most renewals can be finished online through the OMV's expresslane.org portal in about 10 minutes, but every other cycle the OMV requires an in-person visit for a fresh photo and vision screening.
When to renew
Your Louisiana license expires on your birthday in the year shown on the front of the card. The OMV mails a renewal notice about 60 days before expiration to the address on file. If you didn't get one, the most common reason is a stale address — see Louisiana address change for the 10-day update rule. You can renew up to 180 days before expiration without losing time on the new card. After expiration, you have a 10-day grace period before late fees apply, and the OMV can require a new knowledge test if the license has been expired more than 12 months.
Online renewal through expresslane
Most adult drivers who don't need a REAL ID upgrade and aren't due for an in-person cycle can renew online. Eligibility:
- U.S. citizen.
- Current address on file in Louisiana — no parish change since the last renewal.
- Last renewal was completed in person (so the OMV has a recent photo and vision screening).
- No outstanding suspensions, holds, or court-ordered restrictions.
- License is not expired more than 60 days.
The online flow walks through identity verification, an organ donor option, a voter registration update, a card delivery address, and payment by credit or debit card. The new card is mailed within 10-15 business days. The fee is the same as in-person renewal, plus a small online convenience charge.
In-person renewal
Plan an OMV office visit if any of these apply:
- You're upgrading to a REAL ID — federal rules require an in-person visit for REAL ID issuance.
- You've moved to a different parish since the last renewal.
- It's been more than one cycle (6 years) since your last in-person visit.
- Your license is expired more than 60 days.
- You need to add or remove an endorsement (commercial, motorcycle).
- You have changed your legal name and need updated documentation processed.
Bring the same identity, residency, and Social Security documents required for a first-time Class E license. The OMV runs the same vision screening (20/40 corrected) and takes a fresh photo. Expect to spend 30-90 minutes at the field office depending on parish.
Renewal fees
The Louisiana renewal fee is roughly $32.25 for a 6-year license and $24.50 for a 4-year license, plus a $6 office handling fee. A REAL ID upgrade carries the same base fee as a standard renewal. Late renewals add a $15 reinstatement fee if the license has been expired between 10 days and 12 months. After 12 months, the license must be re-tested.
Out-of-country renewal
Louisiana drivers stationed overseas with the U.S. military, working overseas as federal employees, or temporarily relocated for work or school can renew by mail using the absent driver process. Submit a written request to the OMV's central office at least 90 days before expiration with proof of out-of-country status, a passport-style photo, and a statement of intent to return to Louisiana. The OMV issues a one-time mail-renewal extension that's valid for the standard cycle.
Senior renewals (70+)
Drivers aged 70 and older renew on a 4-year cycle and must visit an OMV office in person at every renewal — online renewal is not available for this group. The agency runs an in-person vision screening at each renewal and can refer the driver for medical review if there's a question about fitness to drive. Family members or physicians can submit a Driver Re-Examination Request to the OMV Medical Reporting Unit if there's a safety concern between renewal cycles.
If your license is suspended
You can't renew a Louisiana license that's currently suspended or revoked. Clear the suspension first by following the steps on the Louisiana suspended license page, including any reinstatement fee and SR-22 filing. Once the OMV lifts the suspension, you can renew online or in person depending on which route you qualify for. While suspended, your vehicle registration is unaffected unless the underlying offense also triggered a registration hold.
