Louisiana Registration Renewal

Most Louisiana vehicle registrations renew on a two-year cycle, with the expiration printed on the license plate decal and on the registration certificate. The OMV mails a renewal notice to the registered owner about 60 days before expiration. You can renew online through expresslane, at a Public Tag Agent (PTA), at any OMV field office, or by mail.

Online renewal through expresslane

The OMV's online portal handles most renewals quickly. You'll need:

  • The renewal notice or your license plate number plus last four of the VIN.
  • A valid current brake tag inspection (the OMV verifies this electronically with the inspection database).
  • A passing emissions certificate if you live in one of the five emissions parishes.
  • Proof of Louisiana liability insurance on file (verified electronically).
  • A credit or debit card for the renewal fee.

The new registration certificate prints at home and the windshield decal arrives in the mail within 7-10 business days. Online renewal isn't available for vehicles with insurance gaps, expired emissions, an unsatisfied brake tag, or any registration hold (failure to appear, unpaid parking tickets, etc.).

Public Tag Agent (PTA) renewal

Louisiana licenses private contractors called Public Tag Agents to handle registration work. PTAs typically have shorter waits than OMV offices, evening or Saturday hours, and the ability to print the new decal on the spot. They charge a small convenience fee — usually $5-$15 — on top of state fees. A PTA can also resolve some issues that block online renewal, such as a missing emissions certificate (some PTAs partner with on-site inspection stations).

OMV office renewal

You'll need to visit an OMV office in person if any of the following apply:

  • The registered owner has changed (the previous owner died, the title was transferred, etc.).
  • The vehicle's address has changed to a different parish.
  • You're switching plate types (passenger to commercial, or adding a specialty plate).
  • The registration has been expired more than 60 days.
  • There's a registration hold from another agency that needs documentation.

Mail renewal

Drivers who don't qualify for online renewal but don't need to visit an office can mail the renewal notice with a check or money order to the OMV processing center listed on the form. Include a copy of the current brake tag and emissions certificates. Mail renewal typically takes 3-4 weeks for the new decal to arrive, so don't wait until the last week of validity.

Fees

Louisiana registration renewal fees depend on vehicle class, weight, and base value:

  • $20-$82 standard passenger vehicle renewal (two-year cycle), based on the vehicle's value at first sale.
  • $5 handling fee.
  • $10 annual brake tag inspection fee (paid to the inspection station, not the OMV).
  • $18-$25 emissions inspection in the five emissions parishes.

Late renewal

Louisiana adds a $15 penalty if registration renewal is more than 30 days late, plus interest accruing monthly. Driving with expired registration is a moving violation that produces a citation and adds to the parish's accumulation tracking on your driving record. Police also can't pull insurance verification when a plate has been expired for months, so an expired registration sometimes triggers a separate insurance inquiry.

Brake tag and emissions timing

Louisiana's annual brake tag is independent of the two-year registration cycle, so the brake tag will need to be renewed in alternating years even when registration doesn't. The brake tag sticker shows the month and year of expiration on the windshield. Plan inspections at least 7-10 days before either deadline so any failed item — a brake light bulb, a worn wiper blade, a low tire — has time to be fixed and rechecked without paying for a full second inspection.

Renewals after a move

If you've moved within Louisiana since the last renewal, update your address with the OMV first — see Louisiana address change. The renewal notice goes to the address on file, and parish-level taxes can change between renewals. New residents from other states must complete a full first-time Louisiana registration within 30 days of establishing residency, which is a different and longer process than renewal.
