Renewing Maine Vehicle Registration
Maine vehicle registration renewal happens annually at the town or city office in your municipality of residence, or online through the state's Rapid Renewal portal if your town participates. The renewal is bundled with the annual excise tax, calculated by the municipality based on the vehicle's MSRP and age. Maine drivers also need a current safety inspection sticker on the windshield before renewal will be processed.
When registration expires
Maine registration generally expires on the last day of the month shown on the registration certificate, one year after issuance. Most renewals run on a fixed annual cycle — same month each year — rather than a birthday-based schedule. The municipality typically mails a renewal notice 30 days before expiration. Driving with expired tags is a citable offense and exposes the driver to a fine plus potential late penalties at the next renewal.
Rapid Renewal online
The state's Rapid Renewal system is offered by most Maine municipalities and lets eligible drivers renew online without visiting the town office. To use Rapid Renewal:
- Your town must participate (most do).
- Your address and ownership information must be unchanged.
- The vehicle must have a current Maine safety inspection sticker on file.
- You'll need a credit or debit card and the renewal notice with the access code.
Online renewals process within a few business days, and the new sticker and registration card arrive by mail. Print or screenshot the confirmation to keep in the vehicle until the new card arrives.
Town office renewal
Walk into your town or city office with the renewal notice, current registration, proof of insurance meeting the 50/100/25 + MedPay + UM minimums, and payment for the renewal fee plus the excise tax. The clerk processes the renewal on the spot and hands you the new sticker for the rear plate. Bring the safety inspection sticker date if the windshield sticker is approaching expiration; without a current inspection, the office cannot process the renewal.
The excise tax at renewal
Maine's annual excise tax is calculated by the municipality based on the vehicle's manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) and age. The schedule starts at 24 mills per dollar of MSRP in Year 1 and declines yearly to a floor of 4 mills for older vehicles. The excise tax goes to the town or city, not the state, and is reported alongside the property tax bill in many municipalities. The town office issues a single receipt that bundles registration fee, excise tax, and any optional specialty plate fees.
Safety inspection sticker
Maine requires every passenger vehicle to display a current annual safety inspection sticker on the windshield. Inspections are performed at any state-licensed inspection station, typically while you wait, at a fee set by the station. Stations check brakes, steering, suspension, lights, tires, exhaust, glass, wipers, and seat belts. Vehicles registered in Cumberland County also undergo an emissions check during the same inspection; vehicles outside Cumberland County are exempt from emissions but still require the safety sticker.
Late renewal
If your registration is past due, you may renew it during a short grace period without a late fee, but a citation is possible at any time after expiration. Beyond the grace period, the municipality adds a late penalty to the standard renewal fee. Registrations that have been expired for an extended period may require a fresh safety inspection (and emissions test in Cumberland County) before renewal can be processed.
Sold, scrapped, or stolen vehicles
If you sold, scrapped, or had the vehicle stolen, notify the town office or BMV so the record can be updated. A registration cancellation does not refund the unused portion of the registration fee or excise tax in most municipalities, but it stops future renewal notices and prevents the previous registrant from being held responsible for parking tickets, toll violations, or accidents involving the vehicle. Pair this filing with a notice to your insurance carrier to remove the vehicle from your policy.
Trailers and motorcycles
Trailers and motorcycles also renew at the town office on the same Rapid Renewal platform. Snowmobiles and ATVs follow a separate registration program described on the other vehicle registrations page. Each vehicle class has its own fee schedule, and the excise tax applies to most road-going vehicles based on MSRP.
