Maryland Registration Renewal
Maryland vehicle registration renews on a 2-year cycle for most passenger cars and light trucks. The MVA mails a renewal notice about 60 days before the expiration date, and most renewals can be completed online — but if you live in one of the 13 VEIP counties, the emissions test has to be passed first.
Renewal cycle
Maryland's standard registration cycle is 2 years for passenger vehicles registered to individuals. Some commercial vehicles renew annually, and a few historic-vehicle registrations are perpetual. The renewal date prints on the rear-plate sticker, on the registration card, and on the renewal notice — it's tied to the registration anniversary, not the owner's birthday.
VEIP emissions inspection
If your vehicle is registered in one of these 13 counties — Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Calvert, Carroll, Cecil, Charles, Frederick, Harford, Howard, Montgomery, Prince George's, Queen Anne's, Washington — or in Baltimore City, you must pass a VEIP emissions test before renewing. The test is required every 2 years on most vehicles model year 1996 and newer. Newer vehicles (less than 3 model years old) are exempt at the first cycle.
VEIP testing options:
- VEIP self-service kiosks at MVA branches — uses the vehicle's onboard diagnostic (OBD-II) data and runs the emissions test in under 5 minutes.
- VEIP testing stations — about 18 locations statewide; same OBD-II test, performed by attendant.
- Mail-in for some hybrid and electric vehicles — alternative compliance for vehicles that can't run a normal OBD test.
Cost is approximately $14 per test. A failed test triggers a 30-day repair window plus a free re-test. Vehicles that fail twice may qualify for a hardship waiver.
Renewal options
Online (myMVA)
Most Maryland drivers can renew online if:
- Their vehicle has passed VEIP (if applicable to county) — passed status is auto-confirmed in the MVA system.
- There are no holds, suspensions, or unpaid tickets on the registration record.
- The vehicle insurance is active and on file with the MVA's electronic insurance verification system.
- The address on the registration is current.
Online renewal mails the new sticker (and updated registration card) in 4-7 business days. The same fees apply as in-person.
Self-service kiosks
The MVA operates self-service kiosks at every branch and at several other locations across the state. The kiosks accept registration renewals, address changes, and duplicate license requests. Output is a paper sticker the driver can affix immediately.
By mail
Send the renewal notice with payment to the address printed on the notice. Allow 7-10 business days for the new sticker to arrive.
In person
An in-person branch visit is required when the registration was suspended for an insurance lapse, when the vehicle has unresolved emissions issues, or when there's a name or lien change happening at the same time as the renewal.
Renewal fees
Maryland registration renewal fees are weight-based:
- Passenger cars under 3,700 lbs: roughly $135 for 2 years.
- Passenger cars 3,700-5,000 lbs: roughly $187 for 2 years.
- Trucks and SUVs: scaled by GVWR, typically $187-$300 for 2 years.
- Motorcycles: roughly $52 for 2 years.
Verify exact amounts on the MVA fee schedule, which is updated periodically.
If your registration has lapsed
Maryland charges a daily insurance-lapse fee ($7-$10 per day) if the registration lapse coincides with an insurance gap. After 60 days of lapsed registration with no insurance on file, the MVA suspends the registration and issues an order to surrender the plates. Reinstating requires paying lapse fees, possibly attending a hearing, and re-registering at a branch with current insurance proof. See Maryland suspended license for the broader reinstatement process when a license suspension ties into the registration lapse.
Address change before renewal
If you've moved, update your address through the Maryland address change portal before renewing. Maryland law requires notifying the MVA within 30 days of moving, and it ensures the renewal notice and new sticker reach you on time.
