Massachusetts License Renewal
A Massachusetts driver's license expires every five years, on the holder's birthday. The Mass RMV alternates renewal cycles between an online flow through the myRMV portal and an in-person visit that requires a fresh vision screening and photo. Most adult holders end up at a service center every other renewal, which works out to once every ten years.
When you can renew
The Mass RMV opens the renewal window one year before the license expires. A renewal courtesy reminder is mailed to the address on file roughly 60 days before expiration. Massachusetts is one of the few states that does not impose a late-renewal fine until the license is more than a year past expiration — but operating with an expired license is itself a chargeable offense, so don't drive on a lapsed credential.
Online renewal through myRMV
You can renew online if all of the following are true:
- Your last renewal was completed in person at a Mass RMV service center (this is the alternation rule).
- You're age 75 or younger and your license is not subject to medical-vision restrictions.
- You don't need to upgrade to REAL ID at this renewal.
- You don't have any open suspensions, parking-ticket holds, child-support holds, or unpaid surcharges.
Online renewal through myRMV takes about 10 minutes and the new card is mailed within 7-10 business days. The online fee is $50 for a five-year Class D renewal, paid by credit card or e-check.
In-person renewal
Renewal at a service center is required when:
- You're upgrading to REAL ID for the first time (TSA airport-security gold star).
- It's been 10 years since your last in-person renewal — Mass RMV alternates the cycles by rule.
- You're 75 or older — drivers in this group must renew in person every cycle and pass a vision screening.
- Your name has changed since the last renewal and the new name is not on your current license.
- You have been notified by the RMV that medical recertification is needed.
Bring photographic primary identification (passport or birth certificate), a Social Security number proof if upgrading to REAL ID, and two recent residency documents. The 6-point ID rule applies to first-time REAL ID upgrades but not to a regular renewal where you already hold a Mass license — verify the document checklist on myRMV before the appointment.
Vision screening
The Mass RMV vision standard is 20/40 in at least one eye, with or without correction. In-person renewals include a free screening. Drivers who fail the screening can submit a Vision Examination Report (Form RMV-VR) signed by an optometrist or ophthalmologist within 90 days. A corrective-lens restriction is added to the new license if the screening is passed only with glasses or contacts.
Renewal fees
- Class D license renewal: $50 for five years.
- Class M (motorcycle) endorsement renewal: same $50, included with Class D combined renewal.
- Late renewal more than one year past expiration: an additional $25 amendment fee applied at the service center.
- REAL ID upgrade during a renewal cycle: no extra fee at the time of issuance.
- Mid-cycle REAL ID amendment (after the renewal): $25.
Drivers age 75 and older
Massachusetts requires drivers age 75+ to renew in person every five years and pass a vision screening at each renewal. There is no separate written or road test required for senior drivers, but the Medical Affairs Branch can request additional documentation if a healthcare provider, family member, or law-enforcement officer files a Driver Medical Evaluation. The same provision applies to drivers of any age whose medical history includes seizure disorders, advanced glaucoma, or cognitive decline.
What to do if your card is delayed
The temporary paper renewal slip issued at the service center (or printed at home from myRMV after an online renewal) is valid for 30 days. If the permanent card hasn't arrived in 30 days, log into myRMV, verify the mailing address, and request a duplicate for $25 if needed. About 4% of cards get returned because the carrier database doesn't match the application — double-check the apartment number on file.
Renewing while out of state
The Mass RMV allows out-of-state renewal by mail for drivers who are temporarily living outside Massachusetts (military, students, work assignment) but maintain Massachusetts residency. Submit Form 21077 along with proof of out-of-state circumstances and a current passport-style photo signed and dated within 30 days. Do not surrender your Mass license to another state — that conversion is permanent and would require restarting the licensing process from scratch on return. See the Massachusetts RMV hub for current contact details.
