Massachusetts Registration Renewal

Massachusetts vehicle registrations are issued for two years at a time. The Mass RMV pushes most renewals through the myRMV Online Service Center, which works for the vast majority of passenger vehicles. Renewals are blocked when the city/town reports unpaid excise tax, when a parking ticket from any Massachusetts municipality has not been satisfied, or when the vehicle has missed its annual inspection. Clearing those flags is the first step.

When you can renew

The renewal window opens roughly 90 days before the registration expires. The Mass RMV sends a courtesy reminder by mail and a separate notice through myRMV roughly 30 days before expiration. Driving on expired registration is an offense under M.G.L. c. 90 § 9 with a fine of $40 plus surchargeable status — registrations can be renewed online up to one year past expiration, after which the vehicle must be re-registered through your insurance agent.

Online renewal through myRMV

You can renew online if all of these are true:

  • The vehicle's insurance is currently active and on file with the Mass RMV through the Auto Insurance Bureau (most active carriers ping the RMV nightly).
  • No municipal excise-tax holds are in place.
  • No parking-ticket holds from any Massachusetts city or town are in place.
  • The vehicle has a current safety inspection sticker, or one will be obtained after renewal.
  • The current registration is not more than one year past expiration.

The online renewal fee for a standard passenger plate is $60 for two years. Vanity, commemorative, and special plates have additional surcharges that are tacked on at checkout. Pay by credit card or e-check; the renewed registration certificate prints on plain paper and is valid as proof of registration for 14 days, with the RMV mailing the new sticker for the rear plate within 7-10 business days.

Mail renewal

Drivers who can't renew online can mail the renewal notice with a check to the Mass RMV. Allow 4-6 weeks for the new sticker to arrive. Mail renewal is most often used by drivers whose insurance carrier hasn't pinged the Auto Insurance Bureau within the last 90 days — the online system rejects those registrations until the insurance status is refreshed.

The five common renewal holds

The Mass RMV blocks online renewals when any of these flags are active:

  • Excise-tax hold — your city or town reports an unpaid annual excise bill. Pay the city/town directly; they post the clearance to the RMV overnight.
  • Parking-ticket hold — five or more unpaid tickets in any Massachusetts city or town flag the vehicle. Pay the issuing municipality.
  • Insurance lapse hold — your carrier has reported a lapse, and the registration is on suspension. Reinstate the policy and have your agent submit Form 2A to clear.
  • Safety-inspection hold — the inspection database shows no current sticker. Get inspected; the inspector pushes the result electronically.
  • Child-support hold — the Department of Revenue reports past-due child support. Resolve through DOR before retrying the renewal.

Annual inspection requirement

Every passenger vehicle registered in Massachusetts must pass an annual safety inspection regardless of where the vehicle is in the registration cycle. The inspection costs $35 at a private inspection station. The current sticker mounts on the lower-left corner of the windshield. Vehicles registered in metro Boston (Suffolk, Middlesex, Norfolk, Essex, and Worcester counties) also receive an OBD-II emissions test at the same appointment. See car registration for the inspection-and-registration coordination.

Renewal fees

  • Standard passenger plate renewal: $60 for two years.
  • Vanity plate renewal: $110 ($60 base + $50 vanity surcharge).
  • Commemorative plate renewal: $80.
  • Antique plate renewal: $30 for one year (annual cycle, not biennial).
  • Late-renewal handling fee: $20 if more than 60 days past expiration.

Changing your address before you renew

If you've moved within Massachusetts since the last renewal, update your address through myRMV before initiating the renewal. The new sticker is mailed to the address on file at the moment the renewal is processed; addressing it to the old apartment is the most common reason renewal stickers go missing. See address change for the standard 30-day update rule under c. 90 § 26A.

What if the registration expired more than a year ago?

The Mass RMV does not allow online renewal of a registration that has been expired for more than one year. In that case, you must visit a Mass RMV service center or use a Massachusetts-licensed insurance agent to file a fresh RMV-1 stamped application. Treating it as a fresh registration also typically triggers a re-inspection and the excise-tax bill from the city or town. See Mass RMV hub for service-center hours.
