Renewing a Michigan Driver's License
Michigan driver's licenses run on a 4-year cycle and expire on the licensee's birthday. Michigan SOS sends a courtesy renewal notice about 45 days before expiration. The notice flags whether the driver is eligible for online renewal or whether the renewal must be completed in person at a branch.
Renewal options
Michigan SOS offers four renewal paths:
- Online through the MICOR portal — available to most drivers whose photo is current and whose address has not changed.
- By mail using the renewal coupon on the courtesy notice.
- SOS Express self-service kiosk at participating grocery stores — handles plate-tab renewals and limited license renewals.
- In person at any SOS branch — required for the photo-update cycle, REAL ID upgrades, EDL applications, expired licenses, and any name change.
The photo-update cycle
Michigan SOS requires every driver to take a new photo at least every 8 years. Because the license cycle is 4 years, this typically means an in-person renewal every other cycle. Drivers who took an in-person photo at the last renewal can renew the next cycle online or by mail. The MICOR portal flags the cycle that requires the photo update.
REAL ID and EDL upgrade
Renewal is the natural moment to upgrade from a standard license to a REAL ID or Enhanced Driver License (EDL):
- REAL ID — gold-star card required for domestic flights and federal buildings. No extra fee at renewal but requires REAL ID document set in person.
- EDL — REAL ID-equivalent that doubles as a Canada/Mexico land-and-sea border-crossing document. $45 fee (vs $25 standard). Requires proof of U.S. citizenship.
See Michigan driver's license for the document checklists.
Documents for in-person renewal
- Renewal notice or current license.
- For REAL ID/EDL: birth certificate or U.S. passport, Social Security card or W-2, two proofs of Michigan address dated within the last 90 days.
- For a name change: certified marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order.
- For EDL: proof of U.S. citizenship (passport or birth certificate).
Fees
- Standard or REAL ID Operator's License renewal: $25.
- Enhanced Driver License (EDL) renewal: $45.
- Motorcycle endorsement at renewal: $5 (in addition to the license fee).
- Late renewal (within 4 years of expiration): standard fee plus $7 late surcharge.
- Late renewal (beyond 4 years of expiration): full first-time-license fees and possible re-testing.
Vision screening
Michigan SOS conducts a vision screening at every in-person renewal. Drivers who fail the screening are referred to an optometrist; the optometrist's signed statement on the SOS vision form clears the screening flag. Drivers with corrective lenses must show that the license carries the correct restriction code (e.g., "B" for corrective lenses).
Senior driver renewal
Michigan does not impose age-based renewal restrictions. Drivers over 75 do receive a vision-screening reminder more often, but the standard 4-year cycle continues. There is no shortened cycle, mandatory in-person visit beyond the 8-year photo, or road-test requirement based on age.
Expired license
An expired Michigan license can be renewed up to 4 years past expiration through the standard renewal process, with a $7 late surcharge added. Beyond 4 years, the license is treated as expired and the driver must reapply as a new applicant — knowledge test, vision screening, and possibly a road test. Driving on an expired license is a $185 fine plus court costs (a civil infraction in Michigan).
Address change at renewal
Michigan drivers must report an address change to SOS within 10 days of moving. The change can be made online for free at any time or completed at renewal. See Michigan address change for the full process.
Reinstatement after suspension
Renewing a license that is currently suspended or revoked is not allowed. The suspension or revocation must be cleared first through the Driver License Appeal Division (DLAD) hearing process for OWI sanctions or through the SOS reinstatement procedure for other suspensions. See Michigan suspended license.
Online renewal eligibility
Online renewal is available when:
- The driver is in the alternating cycle that does not require a photo update.
- The address on file has not changed.
- There are no active license sanctions.
- The driver is not seeking a REAL ID or EDL upgrade in this cycle.
- The driver is not changing names.
Most Michigan drivers complete renewal entirely online or at a kiosk and never set foot in an SOS branch more than once every 8 years. Plan an in-person visit for the photo-update cycle, REAL ID/EDL upgrade, expired card, or name change.
