Renewing a Nebraska Driver's License

A Nebraska Class O driver's license is valid for five years and expires on the holder's birthday in the renewal year. The Nebraska DMV mails a renewal notice about 60 days before expiration, and most adult holders can finish the transaction online without setting foot in a driver licensing office — provided they have already completed at least one in-person renewal in the current photo cycle.

When you can renew online

Online renewal through the Nebraska DMV portal is open to drivers who:

  • Hold a current, non-expired Class O license issued by Nebraska.
  • Are between the ages of 21 and 71 at the time of renewal.
  • Have completed at least one in-person renewal in the current photo cycle (Nebraska requires a fresh photo every other cycle, i.e., every 10 years).
  • Do not need to upgrade to a federally compliant REAL ID.
  • Have no holds, suspensions, or pending court actions on their record.

The online process takes 5-10 minutes, accepts most major debit and credit cards, and prints a printable temporary license that is valid for 30 days while the new card is mailed.

When you must renew in person

An in-person visit is required when:

  • The license has expired by more than one year (a fresh knowledge test may be required).
  • The driver is 71 or older — Nebraska requires an in-person vision screen at every renewal at that age.
  • The driver is upgrading to a REAL ID for the first time.
  • The driver is changing their legal name and the change has not previously been recorded.
  • The renewal cycle is the photo cycle (every 10 years).

Documents for an in-person renewal

For a standard renewal, bring the existing license. For a REAL ID upgrade, bring the same documents required for first issuance: a certified U.S. birth certificate or valid passport, proof of Social Security number, and two proofs of Nebraska residency. The DMV scans the originals at the counter and returns them with the temporary license.

Fees

The standard 5-year renewal fee is $26.50. The REAL ID upgrade is included at no extra cost when the driver brings the required documents. Late renewals more than 30 days past expiration add a $5 reinstatement fee; if the license has been expired more than one year, the driver may need to repeat the knowledge test.

The photo and vision-screen cycle

Nebraska's design is unusual in pairing two 5-year cycles into a single photo block: drivers may renew online once between in-person visits but must come into a driver licensing office for a fresh photo and vision screen every 10 years. The DMV portal will tell the driver which cycle they are in when they sign in to renew.

Late renewals and expired licenses

A Nebraska license may be renewed without re-testing for up to one year past expiration. After that, the driver must pass the knowledge test again, and after three years past expiration, the driver must repeat the road exam. Driving with an expired license is a Class III misdemeanor under Nebraska law and creates a record on the Nebraska driver record.

Renewing while out of state

Nebraska drivers who are temporarily out of state — deployed military members, college students, snowbirds — may request an extension on their license expiration by mailing a written request to the Nebraska DMV before the license expires. The extension applies for the period of absence, up to four years. Active-duty service members and spouses receive automatic extensions while stationed outside Nebraska.

What's on the renewed card

A renewed Nebraska license carries the new expiration date, the most recent photo and signature on file, and any new restrictions or endorsements such as a corrective-lens restriction. If the renewal includes a REAL ID upgrade, the small star appears in the upper right corner of the new card. Old cards should be destroyed once the new card arrives. Drivers can pull a copy of their driver record separately to verify that all renewals and endorsements are correctly recorded.
