Renewing Nebraska Vehicle Registration

Nebraska vehicle registrations expire annually on the last day of the registrant's birth month. The county treasurer mails a renewal notice approximately 30 days before expiration that lists the registration fee, the motor vehicle fee, and the annual motor vehicle tax tied to the vehicle's depreciated value. Most owners can finish the transaction online; the county treasurer remains the right place for first-year registrations and any change of ownership.

When to renew online

Online renewal through the Nebraska DMV portal works for most passenger vehicles when:

  • The current registration is not yet expired (or is fewer than 30 days past expiration).
  • There is no name change, address change, or lienholder change in process.
  • Nebraska liability insurance meeting 25/50/25 minimums is in force.
  • No vehicle ownership change has occurred since the last renewal.

The portal asks for the renewal notice number, license plate, and last six digits of the VIN. Payment is by debit or credit card, with a small convenience fee added by the county. The new sticker arrives by mail in 7-10 business days; the registrant can print a temporary receipt for the windshield in the meantime.

When to renew at the county treasurer

Walk-in renewal at the county treasurer's office is required when:

  • The vehicle is being registered in Nebraska for the first time.
  • There is a title transfer associated with the renewal.
  • The renewal is more than 30 days late and the system rejects the online transaction.
  • The owner is changing the address or adding a lienholder.
  • The owner needs replacement plates or a duplicate sticker.

Bring the renewal notice, the current registration, and proof of insurance. The largest counties — Douglas (Omaha), Sarpy (Bellevue and Papillion), and Lancaster (Lincoln) — experience the longest lines during peak weeks; smaller counties typically process walk-ins in under 15 minutes.

What you pay each year

The annual renewal bill includes three line items:

  • Registration fee — roughly $15 for most passenger vehicles, varying slightly by weight and class.
  • Motor Vehicle Fee — calculated from the vehicle's original MSRP and a depreciation schedule that drops with each year of age.
  • Motor Vehicle Tax — a property-style tax also calculated from MSRP and depreciation, distributed to the school district, county, and city.

The combined amount on a brand-new luxury vehicle can exceed $700 in year one, falling to under $100 by year ten. Older vehicles eventually pay only a flat minimum motor vehicle tax of around $5 in addition to the registration fee.

Late renewals

Driving on an expired Nebraska registration is a non-moving violation. The county treasurer will accept a late renewal at any time, but a penalty of $25 plus interest applies starting day 31 past expiration. Vehicles that are not driven during a registration lapse may be eligible for a refund or credit if the lapse spans an entire registration period and the owner can provide proof of non-use.

Renewal for vehicles in storage

Nebraska does not have a "non-operation" filing the way California does, so vehicles taken off the road for an extended period must either continue paying registration or have plates surrendered to the county treasurer. Plates can be reinstated when the vehicle returns to service by paying the full annual registration and motor vehicle tax for the new period.

Out-of-state addresses and military

Nebraska residents temporarily out of state can renew online and have the new sticker mailed to a forwarding address. Active-duty military members stationed outside Nebraska may continue to register their vehicles in Nebraska indefinitely. If the vehicle is permanently moved to another state, the owner should not renew the Nebraska registration; instead, surrender Nebraska plates by mail to the county treasurer.

Records, history, and replacements

Drivers can pull a copy of their Nebraska driver record separately from the registration record. Replacement registration cards are available online for a small fee, and replacement plates can be ordered at the county treasurer for $5.50 plus the new plate fee.
