Oklahoma Address & Name Change

Oklahoma law requires drivers to notify Service Oklahoma of an address change within 10 days of moving and a name change within 30 days of the legal change. The address update can usually be completed online, while a name change requires an in-person visit at a Service Oklahoma branch with original supporting documentation.

Changing your address

Service Oklahoma's online address change tool updates the license, the vehicle registration, and the title address simultaneously. To use it, you'll need:

  • Your Oklahoma driver license number.
  • Your date of birth and last 4 of Social Security number for verification.
  • Your new physical address (no PO boxes — a real street address is required).
  • A valid email address to receive confirmation.

Online address change is free for the basic update. If you want a new license card with the updated address, you can request a duplicate card for a fee of about $25. Most Oklahoma drivers don't bother — the address on the magnetic stripe doesn't carry legal weight, and Service Oklahoma's database is the source of truth.

Why the address matters

An accurate address with Service Oklahoma matters for:

  • Receiving the renewal notice for license and vehicle registration.
  • Receiving the registration card and decal after online renewal.
  • Receiving notice of any insurance lapse triggered through OCIVS reporting.
  • Receiving any administrative or court correspondence about citations or compliance issues.
  • Voter registration (which is linked to the DMV update for most Oklahoma drivers).

Drivers who miss a renewal notice because the address is stale still bear responsibility for the lapse — Oklahoma law assumes drivers know their renewal schedule.

Changing your name

Oklahoma name changes — typically after marriage, divorce, or court order — require an in-person visit to a Service Oklahoma branch. Bring:

  • Your current Oklahoma driver license.
  • Original or certified copy of the legal document supporting the name change:
    • Marriage certificate (for marriage-related changes).
    • Divorce decree (for restoration of a former name).
    • Adoption decree (rare adult cases).
    • Court order specifying the legal name change.
  • Updated Social Security card showing the new name (apply at SSA before visiting Service Oklahoma).
  • Completed Form 1-A Driver License Application reflecting the new name.
  • Payment for the duplicate license card fee (about $25).

The Social Security order

Service Oklahoma verifies the legal name through the Social Security Administration's database. An applicant who hasn't yet updated their Social Security record will be turned away — the SSA update has to happen first. The SSA processes name changes within 7-10 business days, after which Service Oklahoma can issue a license in the new name.

Updating registration and title

Vehicle registration and title also need to reflect the legal name. Oklahoma updates the registration record automatically when the license is updated, but the certificate of title requires a separate transaction at a tag agent. To update the title:

  • Submit the original Oklahoma title showing the old name.
  • Provide the original or certified copy of the legal document supporting the name change.
  • Complete a new Form 701-6 with the updated name.
  • Pay the $11 title amendment fee plus tag-agent convenience fee.

The updated title is mailed to the registered owner's address within 4-6 weeks. See OK title transfer for the related process.

Insurance and other downstream updates

After updating Service Oklahoma, also update:

  • Your auto insurance carrier with both the new address and any name change. Insurance carriers report through OCIVS — a mismatch between the DMV and the carrier database can trigger compliance flags.
  • The Oklahoma Tax Commission for property tax purposes (if you've moved between counties with different rates).
  • Voter registration through the Oklahoma State Election Board.
  • Any active driving-record subscriptions, especially for commercial drivers.

Out-of-state moves

If you've moved out of Oklahoma entirely, you don't update the OK license — instead, you surrender it when applying for the license in your new state. Oklahoma closes the file when the new state confirms issuance. You should still cancel Oklahoma vehicle registration on any vehicle you've titled in the new state to avoid lingering renewal notices and potential late penalties. Pull a final OK driving record for your transfer documentation.

Military and out-of-state student exceptions

Oklahoma residents on active military duty stationed outside the state, or college students studying out of state, can maintain their Oklahoma license and registration with their Oklahoma residency address rather than the temporary location. Documentation of the active-duty assignment or college enrollment is sufficient to maintain the original Oklahoma address on file. Plan to update the address upon return or permanent relocation.
