Other Vehicle Registrations in Oklahoma

Beyond the standard passenger car, Oklahoma's tag-agent network registers a long list of specialty vehicles — trailers, motorcycles, mopeds, RVs, antique passenger plates, and farm trucks — each with its own paperwork track, fee schedule, and operating restrictions. The basics share common ground with passenger registration, but the variations matter.

Trailers

Oklahoma requires registration for any trailer used on public roads, regardless of weight. Utility trailers, boat trailers, travel trailers, and commercial trailers are all subject to registration. Registration documents at a tag agent include:

  • Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin (for new trailers) or prior title.
  • Bill of sale showing purchase price.
  • VIN inspection by the tag agent for trailers brought from out of state.
  • Standard registration fees scaled to trailer weight (from $13 for the smallest utility trailers to over $100 for heavier travel trailers).

Oklahoma offers a permanent trailer registration for utility trailers under 4,000 pounds GVWR — pay a one-time fee at first registration and the trailer never needs annual renewal. This is one of the more generous permanent-trailer programs in the country.

Motorcycles

Oklahoma motorcycle registration follows the same Form 701-6 and tag-agent process as passenger vehicles, with a separate Class M motorcycle endorsement required on the operator's license. The endorsement requires:

  • Passing a separate motorcycle knowledge test, OR
  • Completing a state-approved motorcycle safety course (which waives the knowledge and skills tests).

Oklahoma helmet law requires riders under 18 to wear a helmet; riders 18 and older may legally ride without one. Eye protection (goggles or a face shield) is required for all riders. Motorcycles are subject to the same insurance minimums as passenger cars: 25/50/25.

Mopeds and motor-driven cycles

A vehicle with an engine 50cc or smaller and a top speed of 30 mph or less qualifies as a moped in Oklahoma. Mopeds must be registered with OTC MVD and titled. Operators must hold a regular Oklahoma driver license; no separate moped endorsement is required, but minors must be at least 16 to operate. Mopeds are not allowed on highways or limited-access roads.

RVs and motor homes

Oklahoma registers RVs and motor homes as motor vehicles under either the standard passenger schedule (for smaller Class B and Class C campers) or with a weight surcharge for larger Class A motor homes. Oklahoma does not require a CDL for non-commercial RV operation regardless of GVWR. Most RV registration includes:

  • Standard title fee of $11.
  • Excise tax at the same 3.25% schedule that applies to passenger vehicles.
  • Annual registration fee scaled to vehicle age and weight.
  • Optional specialty plates with surcharges.

Antique passenger registration

Oklahoma offers a Historic Vehicle registration for vehicles 25+ model years old that are maintained primarily for show, parade, or occasional pleasure driving. Benefits:

  • One-time registration fee in lieu of annual renewal — a true permanent registration.
  • Lower-cost specialty plate with a "Historic" designation.
  • Reduced excise tax assessment based on antique-vehicle valuation rather than current market.

Restrictions: historic-plated vehicles cannot be used for daily commuting. A regular passenger registration is required for any vehicle used as primary transportation. Owners caught using a historic-plated car for routine driving can face citation and reassessment of excise.

Farm vehicles

Oklahoma offers a Farm registration class for trucks used predominantly in agricultural operations. Farm-plated vehicles can be used for:

  • Transporting farm products from the farm to market.
  • Transporting feed, fuel, fertilizer, and farm equipment.
  • Travel between farm parcels owned or leased by the same operator.

Farm registration carries a reduced fee schedule. Operators must show that the predominant use of the vehicle is agricultural — the OTC MVD may require records of farm income.

Off-highway and recreational vehicles

Oklahoma registers ATVs, UTVs (side-by-sides), dirt bikes, and snowmobiles when operated on public roadways or crossing public roads. Off-road-only vehicles operated entirely on private land do not require state registration, but Oklahoma's all-purpose vehicle registration program offers titling for theft-recovery and ownership-clarity purposes. The registration is processed at any tag agent.

For trailer transfers between owners, the same title transfer process applies. For motorcycle license endorsements, see Oklahoma driver license.
