Rhode Island Registration Renewal
Rhode Island vehicle registration renews on a 1-year or 2-year cycle, with the 2-year option carrying a small per-year discount. The RI DMV mails a renewal notice 4-6 weeks before expiration, and most drivers can renew through the myDMV online portal in under 5 minutes — provided the vehicle has a current passing safety inspection.
Renewal cycle
A Rhode Island passenger registration expires on the last day of the month shown on the sticker. The DMV mails a renewal notice to the address on file roughly 30-45 days before expiration. You can also subscribe to email reminders inside the myDMV portal. Driving on expired tags carries a fine and exposes you to enforcement during routine traffic stops — RI police routinely run plates as part of traffic stops.
Online renewal through myDMV
Most renewals can be completed online. You'll need:
- The renewal notice number printed on your postcard, or your registration number plus VIN.
- A current passing safety inspection (the inspector files the result electronically with the DMV).
- Active Rhode Island auto insurance meeting the 25/50/25 + UM 25/50 minimums.
- A credit or debit card to pay the renewal fee.
Online renewals process the same business day; the new registration card and sticker arrive by mail within 5-10 business days. If your inspection is overdue, the system will block the renewal until you pass at a state-certified inspection station.
Renewal by mail
The renewal postcard the DMV sends doubles as a mail-in form. Sign it, include a check or money order, and mail to the address on the postcard. Mail-in renewals take 2-3 weeks for the new sticker and registration card to arrive. Plan ahead — if your registration expires within 7 days, renew online or in person rather than risk driving on expired tags while the mail is in transit.
In-person renewal
Visit the Cranston DMV or any regional office to renew at the counter. Bring the renewal notice (or your current registration), proof of insurance, your passing safety inspection certificate (if not on file electronically), and a payment method. In-person renewal makes sense if you're upgrading the registration class, transferring plates, or changing the registered owner.
Fees
Standard passenger vehicle renewal fees scale by vehicle weight and registration term:
- $30-$60 — 1-year passenger renewal, depending on weight class.
- $60-$120 — 2-year passenger renewal.
- $3-$5 — specialty or vanity plate surcharge, if applicable.
- $0 — municipal vehicle excise tax (eliminated as of the 2025 tax year).
Annual safety inspection
You can't renew Rhode Island registration without a current passing safety inspection. The inspection sticker affixes inside the windshield and is dated to the month it was issued. Vehicles 2 model years and older in eligible counties also undergo emissions testing as part of the inspection. If the vehicle fails, the shop lists the failure points and gives you a 30-day window to repair and re-inspect before the registration is blocked.
Late renewal
Rhode Island assesses a late fee on registrations renewed after expiration; the amount scales with how late the renewal is. After a substantial lapse, the DMV may require a vehicle VIN verification at a regional office. Long lapses also affect car insurance rates — insurers see the gap as elevated risk and may decline coverage or move the driver to a non-standard market.
Address changes at renewal
If you've moved within Rhode Island since the last renewal, update your address inside myDMV before submitting the renewal so the new sticker and card mail to the correct location. Out-of-state moves require a full title transfer to the new state and surrender of RI plates, not an RI renewal.
Selling the vehicle near renewal time
If you sell your vehicle around renewal time, do not renew the registration on a vehicle you no longer own. Rhode Island plates stay with the seller, not the vehicle, so transfer the plates to a different vehicle or surrender them at the DMV. Hold off on the renewal until you've decided whether to keep or surrender the plates.
Insurance lapses
Rhode Island insurers report lapses electronically to the DMV, and a lapse triggers a notice asking the driver to reinstate coverage. Failure to respond within the deadline results in registration suspension — a separate hurdle to clear before you can renew. The fastest way out of an insurance-lapse hold is to provide proof of new coverage and pay the reinstatement fee at the Cranston DMV.
