Renewing an Arkansas Driver's License

Most Arkansas Class D licenses run on an 8-year cycle, dropping to a 4-year cycle for drivers under 21 and drivers 70 and older. The Arkansas DFA allows online renewal every other cycle, which means roughly half of all Arkansans can renew without leaving the house. The rest have to make a quick visit to an Office of Driver Services location.

When to renew

An Arkansas license expires on the holder's birthday in the renewal year printed on the card. The DFA mails a renewal notice to the address on file approximately 60 days before expiration. You can renew up to 90 days before expiration without losing any time on the new credential. Driving on an expired license becomes a separate ticket the day after expiration, even if you're a day away from renewing.

Online renewal

Renewing online through the Arkansas DFA portal is available if all of the following are true:

  • Your last renewal was completed in person at an ODS office (i.e., the DFA has a recent photo and signature on file).
  • Your existing license is the standard Class D, not a Commercial Driver License or Intermediate License.
  • You have no current suspension, revocation, or denial action on your record.
  • Your address has not changed, or you've completed a separate address change.
  • You're not upgrading to a REAL ID compliant credential at this renewal.

Online renewal accepts a credit or debit card, charges the standard 8-year fee plus a small portal convenience fee, and mails the new card to the address on file in 7 to 14 business days. You'll receive a printable temporary credential that bridges the gap.

Mail renewal

Arkansas allows mail renewal in narrow situations — primarily for active military members stationed out of state and for Arkansas residents temporarily living abroad. Mail renewal requires a notarized application packet, a copy of the current license, and a check or money order. Contact the Arkansas DFA Driver Services Customer Service line for the current packet; they will not mail it without a confirmation call.

In-person renewal

If you cannot or do not want to renew online, every renewal can be completed in person at any ODS office. Bring:

  • Your current license (or, if expired, an alternate ID such as a U.S. passport).
  • Proof of Social Security number if not already on file.
  • Two proofs of Arkansas residency dated within 60 days, only if you're upgrading to REAL ID for the first time.
  • The renewal fee — $40 for an 8-year Class D, plus $10 if upgrading to REAL ID.

You'll have a vision screening, a new photo, and a new signature. The temporary paper credential is valid for up to 30 days; the permanent card arrives by mail. If your last in-person renewal was more than 16 years ago (i.e., you've used online renewal for two consecutive cycles), the ODS may require an in-person visit this time regardless of preference.

Senior renewal at 70 and older

Drivers 70 and older renew on a 4-year cycle instead of 8 years. Arkansas does not require a special road test or medical certification for renewal at any age, but the in-person vision screening at every renewal becomes the de facto health check. A driver who fails the vision screening may be referred for a medical evaluation under ACA §27-16-410. Many older Arkansans also choose to renew with a state-issued ID rather than a license once they no longer drive.

Renewing a suspended or expired license

You cannot renew while under suspension, revocation, or cancellation. If your license is currently suspended, complete the reinstatement steps first, then renew. If your license expired more than one year ago, Arkansas treats it as a fresh application: vision test, written test, and a road test all required again. Active drivers should set a calendar reminder around their birthday to avoid this.

REAL ID upgrade at renewal

The federal REAL ID enforcement deadline applies to anyone using a state-issued credential to board a domestic flight or enter a federal facility. The Arkansas REAL ID upgrade can be done at the same renewal visit; bring a certified U.S. birth certificate or U.S. passport, the SSN proof, and two residency proofs. The upgrade fee is $10 over the standard renewal fee, and the resulting card carries a small star icon in the upper corner.
