Getting an Arkansas Driver's License

An Arkansas Class D driver's license is the standard adult credential for non-commercial passenger vehicles. The Office of Driver Services handles every step, from the written exam to the road test, and the same DL-1A application form is used regardless of whether the applicant is a brand-new driver or a transfer from another state.

Eligibility

The minimum age for a full unrestricted Arkansas Class D license is 18, or 17 if the applicant has held an Intermediate License for at least one year and has completed driver education. Adult applicants who are 18 or older can skip the graduated stages but still need to pass a vision test, written exam, and road test before they walk out with a license. Anyone moving to Arkansas with a valid out-of-state license has 30 days to convert it; the written exam is generally waived if the previous license was issued by a U.S. state and is unexpired.

Documents required

For a federally compliant REAL ID license (the kind with the small star icon in the upper corner), bring the following to your local Arkansas DFA Office of Driver Services:

  • One identity document — a U.S. birth certificate, certified copy, or unexpired U.S. passport.
  • Proof of Social Security number — SSA card, W-2, SSA-1099, or recent pay stub showing the full SSN.
  • Two proofs of Arkansas residency from two separate sources, dated within the last 60 days — utility bill, bank statement, lease, mortgage, voter registration, or insurance declaration page.
  • A completed Form DL-1A application; you may fill the bulk of it out at home and sign in front of the examiner.
  • Proof of legal name change (marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order) if your documents do not match.

Fees

The Arkansas Class D first-time license fee is $40 for an 8-year credential, with a $10 surcharge for the REAL ID compliant version. Drivers under 21 and drivers 70 and older pay a reduced fee for the shorter 4-year cycle. The written and road exams are no additional charge on the first attempt; failed attempts can be retaken after a short waiting period.

The written knowledge test

Arkansas's written exam is a 25-question multiple-choice test drawn from the current Arkansas Driver License Study Guide. You must answer at least 20 of 25 correctly (an 80% score) to pass. Topics emphasized: right-of-way at four-way stops, school-zone speed enforcement, passing rules on two-lane highways, the state's Move Over law for emergency vehicles, the BAC table, and Arkansas's mandatory child-restraint rule for children under 6 or under 60 pounds. The test is offered in English, and at most ODS offices in Spanish on request.

The road test

Arkansas requires a behind-the-wheel road test for almost every first-time applicant. The test runs roughly 15 to 20 minutes and is administered in a vehicle the applicant brings (with a current safety-inspection sticker and proof of car insurance). Examiners score on:

  • Pre-drive vehicle inspection — signals, brake lights, horn, mirrors, and tires.
  • Smooth acceleration and braking without abrupt corrections.
  • Lane changes with proper signal, mirror, and head-check sequence.
  • Right and left turns from the correct lane into the correct lane.
  • Stopping behind the limit line at controlled intersections without rolling the stop.
  • Backing in a straight line and a basic parallel-park or angle-parking task.

The most frequent reasons Arkansas applicants fail: rolling stops, failure to head-check during lane changes, and curbing the wheel during parallel parking.

License delivery

After passing both exams and paying the fee, you'll receive a paper temporary license valid for up to 30 days. The permanent card is mailed by the central issuance vendor and arrives in 7 to 14 business days at the address on the application. If the card hasn't arrived in three weeks, contact the ODS Customer Service line; about 3% of permanent cards bounce back because of an address mismatch with the U.S. Postal Service database. New drivers should also file an address update immediately if they move during the wait.
