DC Driver's License Renewal
DC licenses run on an 8-year cycle, the longest currently allowed under federal REAL ID rules. DC DMV offers online, mail, and in-person renewal for most drivers, with an in-person visit required at every other cycle to update the photo and signature, and any time the driver needs to upgrade to a REAL ID-compliant card.
When you can renew
Most DC drivers can renew their license up to 180 days before the expiration date printed on the card. Renewing before that window resets the new expiration to the current date plus 8 years, so most people wait until 60 to 90 days out. After expiration, the license is technically invalid; driving with an expired DC license is a $50 to $100 traffic citation.
Online renewal
DC DMV's online renewal portal at dmv.dc.gov works for drivers who:
- Are between 21 and 70 years old (older drivers renew in person for vision screening).
- Renewed in person at the previous cycle (the alternating-cycle rule).
- Have an unrestricted Class D license — not a CDL, not a probationary license, not a hardship license.
- Are not currently suspended, revoked, or under a court hold.
- Already hold a REAL ID-compliant card or are content to keep their current non-REAL ID status.
The online process takes 5 to 10 minutes; the new card is mailed within 7 to 10 business days. Online renewal is not available for first-time REAL ID upgrades.
Mail renewal
DC DMV mails a renewal notice approximately 60 days before the expiration date. The notice includes a barcode that lets the driver renew by mail using a paper form and a check, or move directly to the online portal. Mail renewal works under the same eligibility rules as online: alternating cycles, age 21 to 70, no suspension, no REAL ID upgrade.
In-person renewal
An in-person renewal at any of the four DC DMV service centers (Brentwood, Georgetown, Penn Branch, Southwest) is required when:
- You're upgrading to a REAL ID for the first time (bring full document set).
- You renewed online or by mail at the previous cycle (alternating-cycle rule).
- You're 70 or older and need a vision screening.
- Your name has changed (bring marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order).
- DC DMV has flagged your file for a re-examination.
The in-person visit includes a vision screening, a new photo, and a new signature capture. No knowledge or road test is required for routine renewal — those only return if DC DMV specifically orders them.
Renewal fees
The standard 8-year DC Class D renewal fee is approximately $47; CDL renewals are higher and include federal medical-certification fees. Verify current fees on dmv.dc.gov, as the schedule adjusts every few years. Late renewals carry a small reinstatement penalty if the license has been expired more than 30 days.
What if your license is suspended?
If your license is suspended for unpaid tickets, a DUI, an SR-22 lapse, or a court order, you cannot renew until the underlying issue is resolved. See suspended license reinstatement for the steps to clear holds, file SR-22 if required, and complete any IID program before you're eligible to renew. After full reinstatement, the renewal process returns to the normal online/mail/in-person flow.
Address and name changes at renewal
DC drivers can update an address as part of the renewal at no additional fee. Name changes require an in-person visit with court documentation regardless of whether you're due for renewal. See address and name change for the document checklist; pull your driver record after renewal to confirm everything posted correctly.
