Indiana Address & Name Change
Indiana law requires drivers to notify the Indiana BMV of an address change within 30 days of moving and to update the name on a driver's license or vehicle registration whenever a legal name change is recorded by court order, marriage license, or divorce decree. The address change is free; the name change is processed alongside a license duplicate fee.
Address change online
An Indiana address change can be completed online through myBMV in under five minutes. Log in with your Indiana driver's license number, the last four of your SSN, and your date of birth. Update the address on file — the change applies to:
- The driver's license record (the address shown on the BMV record, not necessarily the printed card).
- Every vehicle registration in your name.
- Any specialty plate or RV registration.
- The mailing address used for renewal notices and BMV correspondence.
The online update does not generate a new printed license card unless you also request a duplicate license ($9 fee). Indiana law treats the address-on-file as legally binding regardless of whether the printed card matches.
Updating the printed license
If you want the new address printed on the license card, request a duplicate through myBMV or at any branch. Bring or present:
- The current Indiana driver's license.
- Two proofs of the new Indiana residency dated within 60 days — utility bill, lease, mortgage statement, bank statement, or pay stub.
- The $9 duplicate fee.
The new card is mailed in 10 to 14 business days; a paper interim license is issued at the branch. Drivers moving from another state should follow the new resident license procedure rather than the address change.
Updating vehicle registration after a move
The myBMV address update covers every vehicle registration on the same record. The BMV mails new registration documents and address-corrected stickers to the new address, but the existing plate and sticker remain valid until the next renewal. There is no separate fee for updating registration addresses, even when multiple vehicles are involved.
If you move out of state and surrender the Indiana license to your new state's DMV, the old Indiana registration must be canceled by surrendering the plates to a BMV branch or by mailing them with a written cancellation request. Failure to cancel can leave the registration on Indiana's records and trigger Excise Tax billing on a vehicle no longer in the state — see the registration renewal page.
Name change after marriage
To change the name on an Indiana driver's license after a marriage, visit any BMV branch with:
- The original or certified copy of the marriage license issued by an Indiana or other-state court clerk.
- The current driver's license.
- One proof of Indiana residency dated within 60 days.
- The $9 duplicate license fee.
The BMV updates the license record, prints an interim license with the new name, and mails the new permanent card within 10 to 14 business days. Photocopies and digital images of the marriage license are not accepted — only certified originals.
Name change after divorce
An Indiana divorce that restores a former legal name requires the divorce decree to specifically order the name restoration. Bring to the BMV:
- A certified copy of the divorce decree showing the name restoration order.
- The current driver's license.
- One proof of Indiana residency dated within 60 days.
- The $9 duplicate license fee.
If the decree does not include a name restoration, the applicant must petition the county circuit court for a separate name change order before the BMV can update the record.
Name change by court order
Any other legal name change (gender marker change, generational change, court-ordered correction) requires a certified court order from an Indiana circuit or superior court. The BMV processes the order using the same duplicate license procedure. The Social Security Administration record must be updated first — see ssa.gov — because the BMV verifies the new name against the SSA database during issuance.
Vehicle title and registration name changes follow a separate path. Submit Form 44237 (corrected title) with the certified court order or marriage/divorce documentation and a $15 title fee. The corrected title is mailed within 7 to 14 business days. See the title replacement page for the related process when the original title has also been lost or damaged.
