Indiana Driver's License Renewal
Indiana issues driver's licenses on a 6-year cycle for most adults — one of the longest in the country. The Indiana BMV sends a renewal notice about 60 days before expiration and offers four ways to renew: online through myBMV, at a BMV Connect kiosk, by mail, or in person at any branch.
Renewal cycle
Indiana's renewal cycle depends on the driver's age at the time of issuance:
- Under 75: 6-year cycle.
- 75 to 84: 4-year cycle, with a vision screening required at every renewal.
- 85 and older: 3-year cycle, with vision screening at every renewal and a road skills exam at the BMV's discretion if a medical examiner has flagged the driver.
The expiration date prints on the front of the license. Indiana does not offer a grace period — driving on an expired license is a Class C infraction, and the BMV does not waive the fee for late renewals within the two-year window.
Online renewal through myBMV
Most Indiana drivers can renew online through the myBMV portal at the Indiana BMV website. The online option is available when:
- The license has not been suspended, revoked, or canceled in the prior 12 months.
- The applicant is at least 18 and not yet 75.
- The previous renewal was completed in person (Indiana requires every other renewal to be in person, alternating with online or mail renewals).
- There is no outstanding ticket, court order, or BMV hold.
- The address on file matches the renewal mailing address.
The online renewal fee is $17.50, paid by credit or debit card, and the new card is mailed in 10 to 14 days. The current license remains valid until the new one arrives.
BMV Connect kiosk renewal
Indiana operates 80+ BMV Connect kiosks in branch lobbies, grocery stores, libraries, and county clerk offices statewide. The kiosk completes a license renewal in about three minutes, accepts card payment, and prints a temporary card and receipt on the spot. The permanent card mails within 10 days. Kiosk renewal is available under the same eligibility rules as online renewal — see the Indiana BMV hub for kiosk locations.
In-person renewal at a branch
An in-person renewal is required at least every other 6-year cycle, and is mandatory for:
- Drivers 75 and older.
- Any renewal that includes a name change, address change, or REAL ID upgrade.
- Any renewal where the prior license was suspended or revoked.
- First-time renewals of a license originally issued out of state.
The branch performs a vision screening and takes a fresh photo. Bring the current license and one proof of residency dated within 60 days. The fee is the same $17.50.
Mail renewal
Mail renewal is offered to drivers who are temporarily out of state, on military deployment, or serving in a federal capacity that prevents an in-person visit. Submit the renewal notice with a completed Form 39530, a copy of the current license, and a check for $17.50 to the Indiana BMV Central Office in Indianapolis. Mail renewal takes 21 to 30 days for the new card to arrive.
REAL ID upgrade at renewal
Indiana licenses have been REAL ID compliant since 2010. If your current license shows the gold star or Indiana state-shape star icon, you already have a REAL ID and can renew online or by kiosk. If your license predates 2010 or was last renewed without REAL ID documentation, the upgrade requires an in-person visit with full identity, SSN, lawful status, and two residency documents. The upgrade fee is the same $17.50 and is bundled into the renewal.
Address verification
Indiana law requires drivers to update their address with the BMV within 30 days of moving. The renewal notice is mailed to the address on file, so a missed move can mean a missed notice. See the address and name change page for the steps required to update an Indiana license and registration after a move within the state or from another state.
If your license has been expired for more than three years, Indiana requires you to retake the knowledge test and road skills exam — see the Indiana driver's license page for the new applicant procedure. Permits and probationary licenses are not eligible for online or kiosk renewal.
