Getting an Iowa Driver's License
An Iowa Class C driver's license is the standard adult license for cars, light trucks, and vans not used commercially. The Iowa DOT issues the credential through its Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) at driver license stations across the state. The full credential runs on an 8-year cycle for most adults, with a shorter 5-year cycle (and lower fee) starting at age 72.
Eligibility
The minimum age for a full unrestricted Iowa Class C license is 17, and only after the applicant has held an Iowa instruction permit for at least 6 months and graduated from the intermediate license stage. Adult applicants 18 and older can apply for a full license without the intermediate stage but still need a permit and a passed skills test.
Documents required for REAL ID
Iowa offers both a federally compliant REAL ID driver's license (with a small star icon in the upper right) and a non-REAL ID alternative. To get the REAL ID version, bring:
- One identity document — a U.S. birth certificate (with raised seal) or unexpired U.S. passport.
- Proof of your Social Security number — Social Security card, W-2, or SSA-1099.
- Two proofs of Iowa residency dated within the last year — utility bill, mortgage statement, lease, bank statement, or property tax bill.
- If your name has changed, a certified marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order.
- A completed form 411007, the Iowa Driver License Application.
New residents must surrender any out-of-state driver's license at the same visit. Iowa transmits the surrender notice electronically to the issuing state.
Fees
The Iowa first-time driver's license fee is $4 per year of validity — currently $32 for an 8-year credential. REAL ID upgrades are no extra cost when issued at the same time. The skills (drive) test fee is approximately $20-$25 paid to the testing examiner; the knowledge test is included in the application fee. These figures should be verified on the Iowa DOT website before your visit, since the legislature adjusts fees periodically.
Knowledge test
The Iowa knowledge test consists of 35 multiple-choice questions drawn from the current Iowa Driver's Manual. You must answer at least 28 correctly (80%) to pass. Topics emphasized in Iowa: speed limits on rural roads, school-zone rules, the move-over law for emergency vehicles, four-way stop right-of-way, hand-held cell-phone restrictions, and the BAC tables that tie into OWI enforcement.
The knowledge test is offered at most Iowa DOT driver license stations and online through the agency's portal for permit applicants. Failed attempts can be retaken — typically the next day at busy offices, sometimes the same day at smaller ones.
Skills test
Iowa's skills test (the behind-the-wheel exam) runs about 20 minutes and is graded on a pass/fail basis with point deductions for specific errors. The examiner watches for:
- Pre-drive equipment check — turn signals, brake lights, defroster, windshield wipers, horn.
- Lane changes with proper mirror use, signal, and head check.
- Backing in a straight line for 50 feet without crossing the lane line.
- Right and left turns from the correct lane to the correct lane.
- Stops at controlled intersections (no rolling stops).
- Speed control through residential streets and school zones.
- Highway entry and merging when the route includes one.
Common reasons applicants fail in Iowa include rolling stops, missed head checks during lane changes, and entering a turn from the wrong lane. The applicant must provide the test vehicle, which must be properly insured and have a current registration.
License delivery
You'll leave the Iowa DOT office with a paper temporary license valid for 30 days. The permanent card is mailed within 2 weeks from the central printing facility. If your card hasn't arrived after 30 days, the temporary can be extended online or by phone while Iowa DOT investigates.
Renewal cycle and older drivers
Most Iowa adult drivers renew on an 8-year cycle. Drivers 72 and older renew on a 5-year cycle at a reduced fee, and Iowa imposes additional vision-screening and (in some cases) skills-test requirements at older-driver renewals. See the Iowa license renewal page for the full schedule.
Once licensed, plan ahead for routine maintenance: address changes within 30 days of a move, regular renewals, and pulling a copy of your driver record before any insurance shopping.
