Iowa Address and Name Changes
Iowa requires drivers to update their address on a driver's license or ID card within 30 days of moving, and to update vehicle registration records on the same timeline. Name changes after marriage, divorce, or court order require a separate in-person transaction with documentation. Both are simple but missing them can disrupt renewal notices, Iowa DOT correspondence, and emergency contact information.
Address change on a driver's license
Iowa DOT offers several ways to update the address on a license:
- Online through the Iowa DOT portal — the fastest option, free of charge. The new address is updated immediately in the Iowa DOT system.
- By mail using form 411011 (Driver License Address/Name Change). Mail to Iowa DOT.
- In person at any Iowa DOT driver license station — required if you also need a new card with the updated address printed.
An online or mail address change updates the Iowa DOT record but does not automatically generate a new license card. The address printed on the existing card stays the same until the next renewal — which is fine for routine identification, since Iowa law treats the Iowa DOT record as authoritative. If you want a new card with the updated address, request one in person at a driver license station for a small fee.
Address change on a vehicle registration
Iowa also requires the vehicle registration address to be updated within 30 days of moving. The county treasurer in your home county handles this update — the same office that processes registration renewals. If you've moved to a different Iowa county, the change can usually be completed at your new county treasurer's office. The change is free; a replacement registration card showing the new address is a small fee.
Why the 30-day rule matters
Several things can go wrong if your address isn't current:
- You miss a license renewal notice and the credential expires.
- You miss a registration renewal notice and accrue late fees.
- You miss a hold-clearance notice and a small unpaid citation snowballs into a license suspension.
- Your insurance carrier bases the policy on a different garaging address than your actual one, which can affect claim handling.
- You miss a court summons, possibly resulting in a default judgment and license hold.
The 30-day clock starts the day you establish residency at the new address, defined by Iowa as the day you move in with intent to remain.
Name change after marriage or divorce
Updating a name on an Iowa driver's license requires an in-person visit with original documents. Bring:
- Your current Iowa driver's license or ID card.
- A certified marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order showing the legal name change.
- Updated Social Security card showing the new name (Iowa DOT verifies the SSA record electronically).
- The fee for a duplicate license — currently a small per-year fee.
The new card is mailed within 14 days. The temporary paper license issued at the field office reflects the new name and is valid until the permanent card arrives. Iowa does not allow a name change on a license without supporting legal documentation; a Social Security card alone, while helpful, is not sufficient on its own.
Name change on a vehicle title
If you've changed your name and need a vehicle title to match, request a duplicate title through the standard title replacement process at your county treasurer, supplying your name-change documentation. The new title is issued in the new name, with your registration record updated at the same time. Lienholders may need to acknowledge the name change separately, depending on the financing terms.
REAL ID and address changes
An Iowa driver's license with the small star icon is a federally compliant REAL ID. Address changes do not affect REAL ID compliance — you can update an address online without losing the star designation. However, a name change does require updating the ID at a driver license station with original documents, and at that visit you can also upgrade to REAL ID if you haven't already.
Voter registration and the Iowa DOT
Iowa offers automatic voter registration through driver license transactions. When you update your license address, you can also update your voter registration in the same step. This keeps the elections roll current — but if you've moved across county or precinct lines, expect a new ballot for the next election.
Notification to Iowa DOT after a county move
If you've moved within Iowa from one county to another, both your driver license record and your vehicle registration must be updated. The license update can be done online or at any Iowa DOT driver license station. The registration update happens at your new county treasurer's office; the new county will handle the registration going forward, including next year's renewal notice and any future title transactions.
