Kentucky Other Vehicle Registrations
Beyond the standard passenger car, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet titles and registers a long list of less common vehicles — motorcycles, trailers, RVs, ATVs, antique cars, and watercraft. Each category has its own fee schedule, documentation rules, and plate type, but most flow through the same county circuit court clerk that handles regular cars.
Motorcycles
A Kentucky motorcycle registration is similar to a passenger vehicle registration, but the operator must hold a Class M motorcycle endorsement on their operator license. The endorsement requires a separate written exam and either an MSF Basic RiderCourse certificate or a KSP-administered skills test. Motorcycle registration runs roughly $18-$25 annually plus the standard ad valorem property tax. Helmets are required for riders under 21 and for any rider holding a learner's permit; experienced riders 21+ are not legally required to wear a helmet under KRS 189.285, though it remains strongly recommended.
Trailers
Kentucky titles trailers separately from the towing vehicle. Utility trailers, boat trailers, travel trailers, and commercial trailers each have their own registration class. Permanent trailer plates are available for non-commercial trailers under 8,000 pounds GVWR — a one-time fee of $25-$45 instead of annual renewal. Travel trailers and fifth-wheel campers register on the standard annual cycle at the regular renewal fee plus property tax. Trailers under 1,000 pounds GVWR don't require a separate title in Kentucky but still need a registration plate if used on public roads.
Recreational vehicles (RVs)
Motorhomes register as Class A, B, or C RVs at fees scaled to vehicle weight and value. The base registration runs $22-$60 annually plus the ad valorem property tax (which can be substantial on newer high-value motorhomes — the NADA value drives the calculation). RVs registered in Jefferson County or the three Northern Kentucky counties require emissions inspection. The KYTC offers specialty RV plates including a "Kentucky Sportsman" RV variant supporting state parks.
Antique vehicles (25+ years old)
Vehicles 25 model years or older qualify for a Kentucky Historic Vehicle plate, which carries a one-time $30 registration fee instead of annual renewal. Historic-plated vehicles can be driven for parades, club activities, antique car shows, and occasional pleasure use, but not as a daily driver. Historic plates exempt the owner from the annual property tax that applies to standard-registered vehicles, which is one of the primary financial benefits. The KYTC may require photos of the vehicle and a notarized statement of intended use.
ATVs and off-road vehicles
ATVs, dirt bikes, and side-by-sides used exclusively off-road must be titled with the KYTC but typically don't carry a public-road registration plate. Kentucky law allows limited road crossings (KRS 189.515) and certain on-road operation in counties with adopted ordinances permitting it. The title fee is the standard $9; ATVs are exempt from emissions inspection. Riders 16 and under must complete a state-approved ATV safety course before operating on public lands.
Boats and watercraft
The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife — not the KYTC — registers most motorized boats. The county clerk titles boats over 16 feet and certain commercial vessels, working in coordination with Fish and Wildlife on the registration side. The boat title fee is $15 and uses a separate vessel-specific application form. Trailers carrying boats are titled and registered through the county clerk under the standard trailer rules above.
Mopeds and electric bicycles
Kentucky defines a moped as a two-wheeled vehicle with engine displacement under 50cc and top speed under 30 mph. Mopeds require a Kentucky title and registration but no separate motorcycle endorsement; the operator must hold at least an operator license. Class 1 and Class 2 electric bicycles (top assist speeds 20 mph) are not registered as motor vehicles in Kentucky. Class 3 e-bikes (top assist speed 28 mph) follow moped rules and must be registered.
Specialty and personalized plates
Kentucky offers more than 80 specialty plates — military, university, charitable, and commemorative. Specialty plate fees range from $25 to $50 above the base annual registration. Personalized "vanity" plates run an additional $25-$50 and require KYTC approval of the chosen letters/numbers. Plate orders take 4-6 weeks. Renewal continues on the standard annual cycle alongside the property tax billed by the county clerk.
Commercial vehicles
Vehicles over 26,000 pounds GVWR require a Class A or B Commercial Driver License and apportioned registration through the International Registration Plan (IRP) for interstate operation. Kentucky's commercial registration includes additional federal Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT, IRS Form 2290) compliance. Commercial vehicle property tax in Kentucky is calculated on a different schedule than passenger vehicle ad valorem and can be substantially higher per registered weight class. See Kentucky car registration for the standard non-commercial rules and Kentucky DMV hub for KYTC commercial program contacts.
