Louisiana Other Vehicle Registrations
Beyond the standard passenger car, the Louisiana OMV titles and registers a long list of less common vehicles — motorcycles, trailers, RVs, off-road vehicles, antique cars, and watercraft. Each category has its own fee schedule, documentation rules, and plate type, but most flow through the same OMV offices and Public Tag Agents that handle regular cars.
Motorcycles
A Louisiana motorcycle registration is similar to a passenger vehicle registration, but the operator must hold a Class M motorcycle endorsement on their Class E license. The endorsement requires a separate written exam plus a Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) Basic RiderCourse or an OMV-administered skills test. Motorcycle registration runs roughly $12-$60 for the two-year cycle depending on engine size, and a brake tag inspection is required annually. Helmets are required for all riders and passengers under La. R.S. 32:190 — Louisiana repealed and reinstated its universal helmet law in the early 2000s and the current rule covers everyone.
Trailers
Louisiana titles trailers separately from the towing vehicle. Utility trailers, boat trailers, travel trailers, and commercial trailers each have their own registration class. Permanent trailer plates are available for most non-commercial trailers — a one-time fee of $50-$100 instead of biennial renewal. Travel trailers and fifth-wheel campers register on the standard two-year cycle at the regular renewal fee. Trailers under 3,000 pounds GVWR don't require a brake tag but still need a Louisiana title and plate.
Recreational vehicles (RVs)
Motorhomes register as Class A, B, or C RVs at fees scaled to vehicle weight and value. The base registration runs $60-$200 for the two-year cycle. RVs require a brake tag inspection annually and emissions inspection if registered in one of the five emissions parishes. RV owners can choose specialty plates — Louisiana offers a "Sportsman" RV plate that supports Wildlife and Fisheries programs.
Antique vehicles (25+ years old)
Vehicles 25 model years or older qualify for a Louisiana Antique plate, which carries a one-time registration fee and exempts the owner from the brake tag and emissions inspection. Antique-plated vehicles can be driven for parades, club activities, occasional pleasure use, and to and from inspection or repair shops, but not as a daily driver. The plate fee is currently $10 one-time, plus the standard $68.50 title fee at first issuance. The OMV may require photos and a notarized statement of intended use.
Off-road vehicles (ORVs)
ATVs, dirt bikes, and side-by-sides used exclusively off-road must be titled with the Louisiana OMV but don't carry a public-road registration plate. Louisiana law allows limited road crossings and certain on-road operation in designated parish ordinances. The title fee is the standard $68.50; ORVs don't require brake tags or emissions inspection. Riders 17 and under must complete an ATV safety course before operating on public lands.
Vessels (boats)
The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries — not the OMV — registers most motorized boats. The OMV titles boats over 16 feet and certain commercial vessels, working in coordination with Wildlife and Fisheries on the registration side. The boat title fee is $68.50 and applications use a separate vessel-specific form. Trailers carrying boats are titled and registered through the OMV under the standard trailer rules above.
Mopeds and electric bicycles
Louisiana defines a moped as a two-wheeled vehicle with engine displacement under 50cc and top speed under 25 mph. Mopeds require a Louisiana title but no plate or registration; the operator must hold at least a Class E license but doesn't need a Class M motorcycle endorsement. Class 1 and Class 2 electric bicycles (top assist speeds 20 mph) are not registered as motor vehicles in Louisiana. Class 3 e-bikes (top assist speed 28 mph) follow moped rules in some parishes.
Specialty and personalized plates
Louisiana offers more than 100 specialty plates — military, university, charitable, and commemorative — at fees ranging from $25 to $100 above the base registration. Personalized "vanity" plates run an additional $50-$60 and require OMV approval of the chosen letters/numbers (no profanity, no government-style sequences). Plate orders take 4-6 weeks and renewal continues on the standard registration cycle.
Commercial vehicles
Vehicles over 26,000 pounds GVWR require a Class A or B Commercial Driver License and apportioned registration through the International Registration Plan (IRP) for interstate operation. Louisiana commercial registration includes additional federal Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT, IRS Form 2290) requirements. See Louisiana car registration for the standard non-commercial rules and Louisiana OMV hub for commercial program contacts.
