Getting a Maine Driver's License
A Maine Class C driver's license is the standard credential for non-commercial passenger vehicles. The process runs through the Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles (Maine BMV), with the actual counter visit at one of 14 branch offices statewide. Maine's licensing program is straightforward for adults but particularly demanding for teens because of the 70-hour supervised-driving requirement built into the path from learner's permit to full license.
Eligibility
The minimum age for a full unrestricted Maine Class C license is 18, or 17 for teens who have held an intermediate license for at least 9 months without a moving-violation conviction. Adult applicants 18 and older who never went through the GDL track must hold a learner's permit for at least 30 days before they can take the road test, and they must complete a Maine-approved adult driver-education program if it's their first license.
Documents required
For a federally compliant Maine REAL ID, bring documents in four categories:
- One identity document — a U.S. birth certificate with raised seal or a valid U.S. passport.
- Proof of your Social Security number — SSN card, W-2, or SSA-1099.
- Two proofs of Maine residency from two different sources, dated within the last 90 days — utility bill, bank statement, lease, mortgage statement, voter registration confirmation.
- Proof of any name change since birth (marriage certificate, divorce decree, court order).
The application itself is the Form M-301. The branch staff will watch you sign it at the counter. A standard (non-REAL ID) Maine license uses similar documents, but it cannot be used for domestic flights or to enter federal facilities once REAL ID enforcement is fully in place.
Fees and the 6-year cycle
Maine first-time license fees are modest. The standard Maine license is issued on a 6-year cycle for most adult holders, which is longer than the 4-year cycle several states use but shorter than the 8-year cycle in Texas or the optional 8-year cycle in Idaho. REAL ID upgrades carry a small additional fee on top of the base license fee.
Knowledge test
Maine uses a multiple-choice knowledge test drawn from the current Maine Driver's Manual. Test takers may miss a small number of questions to pass — typically about 80% — with the exact pass threshold listed in the current handbook. The test is offered in English at all branches and in additional languages at some larger branches such as Portland and Lewiston. Topics emphasized in Maine: right-of-way at unmarked intersections, sharing the road with logging and farm equipment, school-bus passing rules, the move-over law for emergency vehicles, snow and ice driving, and the BAC table for OUI and aggravated OUI.
Road test
Maine's road test is administered at a BMV branch by a state examiner. The exam runs roughly 20 minutes and covers:
- Pre-drive inspection (signals, brakes, lights, mirrors, tires, defroster, wipers).
- Backing in a straight line for at least 50 feet without crossing a marked line.
- Right and left turns from the correct lane to the correct lane.
- Stopping smoothly at controlled intersections and at stop signs (no rolling stops).
- Lane changes with the mirror, signal, and head-check sequence.
- Parallel parking is included at some branches.
- Highway entry and merging when the route includes one.
The most common reasons applicants fail in Maine: rolling stops at stop signs, failure to make complete head checks during lane changes, and entering a turn from the wrong lane. If you fail, you can retest after a short waiting period; the third attempt typically requires a new application fee.
License delivery
You'll receive a printed temporary license at the BMV branch that's valid for about 30 days while the permanent card is mailed from a central production facility. The permanent card typically arrives within 2-4 weeks. If it doesn't arrive within 60 days, contact Maine BMV to confirm the mailing address and request a reissue. Once the card is in hand, make sure your Maine insurance policy at 50/100/25 plus MedPay and UM is on file with the carrier shown on the registration.
