Renewing Your Maine Driver's License
Maine driver's licenses are issued on a 6-year cycle for most adult holders, with renewals available online, by mail, or in person at any of the 14 BMV branches statewide. The Maine BMV mails a renewal notice to the address on file roughly 30 to 45 days before the current card expires, and most drivers can finish the renewal online if their address and vision are current. Every other cycle still requires a counter visit at a BMV branch for a fresh photo and vision screening.
When to renew
Drivers can renew up to 12 months before expiration without losing time on the new credential. Driving on an expired license is a violation under Maine law that carries a fine and is enforced at traffic stops. A license expired more than 12 months may have to be re-applied for as a new license rather than renewed, depending on the duration since expiration.
Online renewal
Eligible drivers can renew online through the Maine BMV portal. To use the online option you typically must:
- Have an unchanged Maine address since the last renewal.
- Have a current vision screening on file (within the last 6 years).
- Have no suspension, revocation, or hold on the driving record.
- Have completed the previous renewal in person.
Maine generally requires an in-person visit every other cycle to capture a fresh photo, signature, and vision screening. If the last renewal was online, the next must be in person.
In-person renewal
For an in-person renewal at a BMV branch, bring the current license, a payment method for the renewal fee, and any documents needed if you're upgrading to REAL ID. The REAL ID upgrade requires the same identity, SSN, and residency proof outlined on the first-license page. The vision screening is administered at the counter; if the driver fails, BMV may issue a temporary credential pending a full eye-care provider's report.
Renewal by mail
Maine offers a limited mail-in renewal option for drivers who are temporarily out of state — typically active-duty military, college students, or seasonal workers. The applicant requests a mail-in packet from BMV, completes the form, has a recent vision report attached, and returns the materials with payment. Mail renewal is not available for REAL ID upgrades or any cycle that triggers an in-person rule.
REAL ID upgrade
Maine REAL ID-compliant licenses carry a star marker in the upper corner. The upgrade is voluntary but recommended for any Maine driver who plans to fly domestically or enter federal facilities once full REAL ID enforcement is in place. Upgrading at renewal time costs only the standard renewal fee plus the REAL ID fee, and the documents needed are the same as for a first license.
Drivers 65 and older
Maine drivers 65 and older renew on a shorter 4-year cycle rather than the 6-year cycle that applies to younger adults. A vision screening is administered at every renewal, with no online option after the threshold age in some cases. BMV may also flag drivers for re-examination based on referrals from law enforcement, healthcare providers, or family members concerned about a medical condition that affects driving. The re-examination process is administrative and can result in restrictions, an updated medical report requirement, or a full road test.
Vision standards
Maine's standard vision requirement for a Class C license is 20/40 visual acuity in at least one eye, with or without correction. Drivers who don't meet the standard may still qualify for a license with restrictions (corrective lenses, daylight only, local-area only) based on an eye-care provider's recommendation. The vision screening is straightforward at the BMV branch and uses a standard eye chart.
After renewal
The new card is mailed from BMV's central production facility in 2-4 weeks; the branch issues a temporary paper credential at the counter. Once the card arrives, update the photo on file with your insurance carrier if your name changed, and confirm that your vehicle registration at the town office is current.
