Other Massachusetts Vehicle Registrations

The Mass RMV registers more than just passenger cars. Trailers, motorcycles, antique vehicles, RVs, mopeds, and farm-use vehicles each follow a slightly different track at registration, and several categories have their own plate type, fee schedule, and inspection rules. The general principle is the same — every transaction starts with an insurance-stamped RMV-1 application — but the supporting paperwork varies by category.

Motorcycles (Class M)

Motorcycle registration in Massachusetts requires a Class M endorsement on the operator's driver's license. The endorsement is added through a written test and a separate Motorcycle Skills road test, or through completion of a Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) RiderCourse, which the Mass RMV accepts in lieu of the road test. Motorcycle registration uses a smaller plate, a $20 plate fee plus standard $60 registration fee, and the same annual safety inspection (the inspection is reduced to mechanical and lighting only — no emissions). Motorcycles are subject to liability minimums (20/40/5 + PIP $8,000 + UM 20/40) the same as cars.

Trailers

Trailers in Massachusetts require their own registration if their gross weight exceeds 3,000 pounds. Below that, single-axle utility trailers under 3,000 lbs are also required to display a plate but follow a simplified registration process. Trailer plates are dedicated and don't transfer to a tow vehicle. Fees:

  • Trailer up to 3,000 lbs: $23 for two years.
  • Trailer 3,001-10,000 lbs: $60 for two years.
  • Trailer over 10,000 lbs: graduated commercial fee schedule, plus an annual trailer-specific inspection.

Trailers are exempt from emissions but still pass the safety inspection covering brakes, tires, lights, and coupling.

Antique vehicles

Massachusetts defines an "antique" motor vehicle as one that's at least 25 years old and maintained in original or restored condition for exhibition rather than daily use. Antique registration uses a distinctive blue-and-white plate and follows an annual cycle:

  • Annual fee: $30.
  • Use restriction: parades, exhibitions, club events, and limited pleasure driving — not commuting.
  • Inspection: annual antique inspection at a participating station; emissions exempt.
  • Insurance: still required at the standard Massachusetts minimum (no antique-specific exemption from PIP).

Antique plates can be transferred to a different antique vehicle in the same owner's name without re-issuance, which is something the Mass RMV does specifically for the antique class.

Recreational vehicles (RVs)

Self-propelled RVs (motorhomes Class A, B, and C) register as standard passenger vehicles with the Mass RMV. The 6.25% Sales/Use Tax applies on the full purchase price, and the registration runs on the standard 2-year cycle. RVs above 10,000 lbs gross weight use a commercial weight-class plate and pay a graduated fee. Travel trailers are registered as trailers and follow the trailer fee schedule above.

Mopeds and limited-use vehicles

A moped in Massachusetts is defined as a two-wheeled motorized vehicle with an engine no larger than 50cc and a top speed of 30 mph. Mopeds:

  • Require a separate Limited License or a Class D license.
  • Use a moped-only registration ($40 for two years).
  • Are exempt from the annual safety inspection (the only common Massachusetts vehicle category that is).
  • Cannot be operated on limited-access highways or interstates.

Farm vehicles

Massachusetts issues a "Farm" plate for vehicles used principally in agricultural operations. The plate carries restrictions: travel within a 25-mile radius of the farm, no commercial passengers, and use limited to actual farm operations. The annual fee is a flat $25. Farm plates do not exempt the vehicle from the safety inspection, but emissions inspection is waived. Apply through the Mass RMV with a notarized affidavit of farm use signed by the owner.

Off-Highway Vehicles (OHV)

OHVs — ATVs, snowmobiles, and recreation utility vehicles (UTVs) — register through the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, not the Mass RMV. The OHV registration fee is $60 for two years, with an additional state-trail-fund fee. OHVs cannot be operated on public roadways except where local ordinance permits, and they are exempt from the Mass RMV safety inspection. See Mass RMV hub for cross-agency contacts.

Commercial vehicles and CDLs

Commercial vehicles (over 10,000 lbs GVWR or used to transport hazardous materials) require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) separate from the Class D. The Mass RMV CDL Section operates out of three high-volume centers — Wilmington, Worcester, and Brockton — with appointment-only knowledge testing and behind-the-wheel road tests in your own commercial vehicle. CDL applicants under the FMCSA Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) rule must complete a registered training provider's curriculum before scheduling the road test.

Special and commemorative plates

Massachusetts offers more than 90 specialty plates — Cape Cod, Boston Bruins, Patriots Pride, Right Whale, environmental conservation, military-service, and veterans' plates among them. The standard commemorative fee is $80 for two years, with a portion of each plate's proceeds directed to the related charity, agency, or fund. See registration renewal for how specialty plates renew.

Across all of these categories, the same Massachusetts insurance minimum applies: 20/40/5 liability + PIP $8,000 + UM 20/40. There is no category that escapes Massachusetts's no-fault PIP requirement, including antique and farm plates.
