Registering a Vehicle in Michigan

Registering a vehicle with Michigan SOS combines the title application, registration application, sales-tax payment, and proof of Michigan no-fault insurance into a single visit at any SOS branch. New residents have 30 days from establishing residency to register a vehicle in their name.

When registration is required

  • You purchase a vehicle from a Michigan resident or a Michigan dealer.
  • You move to Michigan from another state with a vehicle in your name.
  • You inherit, gift, or receive a transferred vehicle from a family member.
  • You complete a private-party purchase from an out-of-state seller.

Michigan dealers typically handle registration and titling for the buyer at delivery, including the sales-tax payment and temporary plate. Private-party purchases require the buyer to complete the registration directly at SOS.

Documents required

Bring to a SOS branch:

  • Form TR-11 (Application for Vehicle Registration).
  • Form TR-11L (Application for Michigan Vehicle Title) — if also taking title at the same visit.
  • Original vehicle title with the seller's signature on the back. Michigan titles include odometer disclosure space.
  • A completed bill of sale, if not printed on the title.
  • Proof of Michigan no-fault insurance — printed or digital insurance ID showing the vehicle by VIN and the policyholder's Michigan address.
  • Valid Michigan driver's license or state ID.
  • Lien-holder information if the vehicle is financed.

Sales tax

Michigan sales tax (use tax) is 6% of the purchase price. Vehicles purchased from a Michigan dealer have the tax collected at delivery. Private-party purchases require the tax to be paid at SOS at title transfer based on the bill-of-sale price or the SOS-published market value, whichever is higher.

Michigan allows trade-in credit on the sales-tax base — the trade-in value is deducted from the purchase price for sales-tax purposes, up to a $9,000 trade-in cap (rising in stages by statute). Family-member transfers (spouse, parent/child, sibling) at no cost are exempt from sales tax.

Registration fees

Michigan calculates the annual registration fee based on the vehicle's MSRP at original sale, not weight or current value:

  • Vehicles 1984 model year and newer: fee is based on the original MSRP using a published table (typically $100-$250 for sedans, $200-$500 for trucks/SUVs at original sale).
  • Vehicles 1983 and older: fee is based on weight and depreciated value (typically $35-$95).
  • Electric vehicles: $140-$240 surcharge in addition to the base fee.
  • Hybrid vehicles: $50-$100 surcharge.
  • Plug-in hybrids: tiered surcharge based on battery capacity.

Michigan's MSRP-based system means luxury vehicles pay materially more in registration than economy cars — even after years of depreciation, the original MSRP determines the renewal fee.

Proof of insurance

SOS verifies at the counter that the policy listed by the applicant is on file with the Michigan Insurance Identification Database. The policy must show the vehicle by VIN and meet at least the Michigan minimums: 50/100 bodily injury, $10,000 PD, and a chosen PIP coverage level (or qualifying Medicare opt-out). Out-of-state policies cannot be used for Michigan registration even temporarily — the policy must be reissued to Michigan first. See Michigan car insurance.

License plates

Michigan issues a single rear license plate to passenger vehicles (no front plate required). The standard plate is white with blue letters; specialty and personalized plates are available for additional fees. Plates remain with the owner, not the vehicle, when transferred between cars.

Michigan plate registrations expire on the vehicle owner's birthday, not on the date of purchase. New residents register the vehicle at SOS within 30 days; the first cycle runs through the next birthday before flipping into the standard 12-month cycle. Multi-vehicle households can synchronize plate cycles upon request.

No vehicle inspection

Michigan does not require any routine vehicle inspection — no safety inspection, no emissions testing, no smog program. New residents do not need to complete an inspection before titling and registration. See Michigan registration renewal for the renewal process.

VIN inspection for out-of-state vehicles

Michigan does require a VIN inspection for vehicles being titled in Michigan for the first time when the vehicle was previously registered out of state. The inspection is performed at any SOS branch, by a licensed Michigan dealer, or by a Michigan law-enforcement officer. The inspection is free at SOS and confirms the VIN matches the title.

After registration is complete, the SOS branch issues the metal license plate (or a plate transferred from a previous vehicle) and the registration card. Drivers leave the branch with the plate mounted before leaving the lot. See Michigan title transfer for the title side of the transaction.
