Renewing Michigan Vehicle Registration
Michigan vehicle registrations renew every year on the vehicle owner's birthday. SOS sends a courtesy renewal notice about 45 days before expiration. The renewal can be completed online, at a self-service kiosk, by mail, or in person — and most ordinary passenger renewals run online or at a kiosk in under five minutes.
Renewal options
- Online through the MICOR portal — instant renewal with electronic tab confirmation; the metal tab arrives by mail in 7-10 days.
- SOS Express self-service kiosk at participating Kroger and Meijer locations — handles plate-tab renewal with same-day metal tab printing.
- By mail using the renewal coupon attached to the courtesy notice.
- In person at any SOS branch — required for transfers, name changes, plate replacements, or renewals with active sanctions.
SOS Express kiosks
Michigan SOS operates more than 60 self-service kiosks at grocery stores statewide. The kiosks offer:
- Plate tab renewal with same-visit tab printing.
- Address change.
- Duplicate registration card.
- Vehicle history check.
Kiosks accept credit, debit, and check. They do not handle title transfers, license renewals, or transactions with active sanctions. Average kiosk transaction time: under 2 minutes.
Online renewal eligibility
Online renewal is available when:
- The vehicle is registered to an individual (not a business or commercial entity).
- The owner's address has not changed since the last renewal.
- There is no insurance lapse, court hold, or financial sanction on the registration.
- The owner has not changed.
- The vehicle has a current Michigan no-fault policy on file.
No vehicle inspection
Michigan is one of the few states that does not require a routine safety inspection or emissions testing for non-commercial vehicles. There is no statewide inspection program at any model year. Renewals run without an inspection regardless of vehicle age or mileage. The lack of inspection is one reason the Michigan registration process is among the fastest in the country.
Fees
The annual registration fee is based on the vehicle's original MSRP for vehicles 1984 and newer. See the Michigan vehicle registration page for the fee table. Renewal fees match initial registration fees for the same vehicle. Michigan also charges:
- Standard renewal fee (MSRP-based).
- Electric vehicle surcharge: $140-$240/year.
- Hybrid surcharge: $50-$100/year.
- Specialty plate fees (cause-based plates).
Multi-year registration
Michigan SOS offers 2-year and 3-year multi-year registrations at original purchase or renewal. The fee is the annual rate × the number of years, paid in advance. Multi-year registrations save mailing trips but commit the registration to a single owner — transfers during the multi-year period require a regular title transfer at SOS.
Grace period
Michigan allows a small grace period for late renewal. Driving on an expired registration is a civil infraction with a $185 fine. Beyond 60 days, SOS may add late fees. Beyond 4 years of expiration, the vehicle must complete a full re-registration with VIN verification, similar to a first-time registration.
Insurance lapse holds
If the Michigan Insurance Identification Database shows a coverage lapse, SOS places a hold on the registration. The hold lifts once a current insurance ID card is filed. Lapses of more than 90 days result in a registration suspension and reinstatement fee. See Michigan insurance for current minimums.
Personalized and specialty plates at renewal
Personalized and specialty plates renew at the standard cycle but with extra annual fees:
- Personalized plates — $30 first issuance, $15 renewal.
- Cause-based fundraiser plates (university, military, environmental) — $35-$45 first issuance, $25-$35 renewal.
- Veterans, Purple Heart, POW — issued at no cost to qualifying applicants.
- Spectacular Michigan plates — $5 issuance, no renewal surcharge.
Surrendering plates
If the vehicle is sold, exported, or scrapped, Michigan requires the plate to remain with the registered owner — Michigan plates are owner-attached, not vehicle-attached. The owner can transfer the plate to a replacement vehicle, retain it for future use, or surrender it at any SOS branch. Surrendering protects the former owner from any future violations on the plate.
For most Michigan drivers, registration renewal is the simplest motor-vehicle interaction the state offers. The lack of inspection and the kiosk option make Michigan one of the fastest renewal experiences in the country.
