Mississippi Address & Name Change

Mississippi DPS requires every licensed driver to notify the Driver Service Bureau of a new address within 60 days of the move. Name changes have no formal deadline but require an updated license before any other transaction (renewal, title transfer, ID upgrade) can be processed under the new name. The address change is free if no card replacement is needed; the name change requires a license replacement fee.

Address change — the 60-day rule

Under MS Code § 63-1-49, every licensed Mississippi driver must report a change of residence address to MS DPS within 60 days. The report can be filed:

  • Online through the Mississippi DPS website (the fastest path).
  • By mail with a written notice to the Driver Service Bureau.
  • In person at any DPS driver service center.

Reporting the new address through the online portal updates the DPS database within 1-2 business days. The address change itself is free; a replacement license card with the new address printed costs $11.

Carrying the old address temporarily

Mississippi drivers can carry a license that shows the old address as long as DPS has the new address on file. Most drivers don't immediately replace the card unless a current address is needed for a specific purpose — for example, to satisfy a job's I-9 verification or a TSA REAL ID requirement. The license itself remains valid through its printed expiration regardless of the printed address.

Vehicle registration address

The registered address on every Mississippi-titled vehicle should also be updated when the owner moves. Address updates within the same county can typically be processed at the next registration renewal; a move to a different county requires registration with the new county tax collector at the next renewal cycle. Failing to update the registration address means renewal notices, ad valorem tax bills, and any photo-radar correspondence will mail to the old address — one of the most common reasons drivers end up with FTA suspensions on tickets they never received. Any owner who suspects unreceived correspondence should pull a current Mississippi driver record to check for outstanding holds.

Address change for a REAL ID

Mississippi's REAL ID-compliant license includes the address as a federally verified data element. Updating only through the online portal is sufficient for non-REAL ID licenses, but a REAL ID requires re-presentation of the two qualifying residency documents to DPS for the new address to print on a replacement card. Most REAL ID holders make this update at the same visit as a routine in-person renewal — see Mississippi license renewal.

Name change after marriage

To update a license to a married name in Mississippi, bring:

  • The current Mississippi driver license.
  • A certified copy of the marriage certificate (court-issued original or county-clerk certified copy — not a souvenir certificate from the wedding).
  • An updated Social Security card showing the new name. Social Security must be updated before DPS will issue a license in the new name — this is a federal requirement under SSA matching.
  • $11 replacement license fee.

The replacement is processed at any DPS driver service center. The name change cannot be completed online — DPS does not accept supporting documents for name changes through the web portal.

Name change after divorce

The required documents are similar but include either:

  • The certified divorce decree showing the legal name restoration ordered by the chancery court.
  • OR a certified court order specifically authorizing the name change (some Mississippi divorce decrees do not address the name; in those cases a separate name-change petition under MS Code § 93-17-1 is required).

Plus the current Social Security card in the restored name and the standard $11 replacement fee.

Name change for any other reason

For a name change unrelated to marriage or divorce — gender transition, religious change, court-ordered name correction — the supporting document is a certified court order from a Mississippi chancery court (or equivalent out-of-state court) authorizing the change. The name change petition under MS Code § 93-17-1 is filed in the county of residence; once the order is signed, the certified copy goes with the license replacement application to DPS. Social Security records must be updated first.

Updating vehicle title to a new name

A Mississippi vehicle title with the old name should also be updated when the registered owner's name changes. The county tax collector will reissue the title with the new name at the next renewal or title transfer; the standard $9 title fee applies. Title-to-title transfers between spouses, or following divorce, may also need to be processed as a formal title transfer if the original ownership shared the title with someone else. Be sure the policy on the vehicle insurance is updated to the new legal name within 30 days so claims are not delayed, and confirm IVS shows the new name correctly.

Name and address change at the same visit

If both a name change and an address change are needed (common after marriage that includes a move), DPS will process them in a single visit. Bring all supporting documents for both changes — the marriage certificate, updated Social Security card, two proofs of new residency, and the $11 replacement fee. A single replacement license is issued reflecting both changes.
