Mississippi Registration Renewal
Mississippi vehicle registration renews on the last day of the registered owner's birthday month — not on the anniversary of the original registration. The renewal includes the annual privilege license tax, county tag fees, and the recalculated ad valorem (property) tax. The county tax collector is the only office that can process the renewal; the state does not centralize the transaction.
The birthday-month cycle
Mississippi registration expiration is tied to the registered owner's birthday month. A driver born in June, for example, has a registration expiring on June 30 every year regardless of when the vehicle was first titled. Multi-vehicle owners typically have all vehicles on the same June 30 cycle for that reason. Renewal notices are mailed by the county tax collector approximately 30 days before expiration; an email reminder is also sent if the owner has signed up for county notifications.
Renewing online
Most Mississippi counties offer online renewal through the county tax collector's website. The driver enters the license plate number, confirms the recalculated ad valorem and tag fees for the year, pays by credit or debit card, and receives the new tag decal by mail in 5-10 business days. A small ($2-$3) credit-card processing fee applies. Online renewal is available only for routine renewals — vehicles with prior-year delinquencies, address changes, or owner changes must renew in person.
Renewing in person
An in-person renewal at the county tax collector is required when:
- The vehicle has changed ownership and the title transfer hasn't been completed — see title transfer.
- The owner has moved to a different county.
- The renewal is more than 30 days late.
- An out-of-state title transfer is being processed at the same time.
The driver brings the prior registration card, proof of 25/50/25 Mississippi liability insurance, and payment for the renewal fees plus the calculated ad valorem. Walk-ins are accepted at all 82 county tax collectors; some larger counties offer appointment scheduling.
Renewing by mail
Most counties accept mail-in renewal payments. The owner returns the renewal notice with a check or money order for the calculated total. The new tag decal is mailed in 7-14 business days. Mail-in renewal is not available for renewals more than 30 days late, ownership changes, or address changes.
The annual ad valorem recalculation
Each renewal, the county tax collector recalculates the ad valorem (property) tax on the vehicle. The calculation uses:
- The MDOR-published "true value" for the vehicle for the current year (typically declining year-over-year as the vehicle ages).
- 30% assessed-value rate against true value.
- The county's millage rate for the current fiscal year.
The result is a per-vehicle property tax that declines slowly each year as the vehicle ages but can also increase if the county raises its millage rate. The ad valorem is the largest line on most Mississippi renewal bills, often exceeding the privilege license tax and tag fees combined. The county tax collector will provide an itemized statement on request.
Late renewal penalties
A Mississippi registration renewal more than 30 days past expiration triggers:
- A 5% per month privilege-tax penalty, capped at 25%.
- A $250 ad valorem penalty for renewals more than 60 days late under MS Code § 27-19-63.
- The vehicle's tag is technically invalid, exposing the driver to a citation for unregistered vehicle — a moving violation under MS Code § 27-19-63.
The penalty applies whether the delay is administrative (waiting for documents) or personal (forgot to file). New residents who miss the 7-day initial registration deadline pay the same penalty schedule.
Privilege license tax
Mississippi's annual privilege license tax is $14 (state portion), with county and municipal tag fees added. Tag fees vary by jurisdiction but are typically $7-$15. Some counties charge an additional $5 ad valorem-tax billing fee. Specialty plates (university plates, organization plates, military plates) carry an additional plate fee of $30-$50 on top of the standard privilege license tax.
Insurance verification
Mississippi requires proof of insurance at every registration renewal. The county tax collector verifies coverage electronically through the MS DPS Insurance Verification System (IVS). If the IVS shows no active coverage, the renewal is held until the driver provides proof. A no-insurance flag results in license and registration suspension — see Mississippi suspended license for the reinstatement process. Be sure to pull a current driver record if any concern arises about IVS reporting accuracy.
Address change at renewal
If the owner has moved within Mississippi, the address can be updated at the county tax collector's office at the same visit as renewal. Moves to a different county require renewal at the new county's tax collector, not the prior county. See Mississippi address change for the full address-update process. New residents from out of state must complete the initial 7-day registration at the new county tax collector regardless of the prior state's renewal cycle.
