Missouri Address & Name Change

Missouri law requires drivers to notify the Missouri Department of Revenue of an address change within 30 days of moving and to update the name on a driver's license or vehicle registration whenever a legal name change is recorded by court order, marriage license, or divorce decree. The address change is free; the name change is processed alongside a duplicate license fee.

Address change online

A Missouri address change can be completed online through the DOR portal in under five minutes. Log in with your Missouri driver's license number, the last four of your SSN, and your date of birth. Update the address on file — the change applies to:

  • The driver's license record (the address shown on the DOR record, not necessarily the printed card).
  • Every vehicle registration in your name.
  • Specialty plate or RV registrations.
  • The mailing address used for renewal notices and DOR correspondence.

The online update does not generate a new printed license card unless you also request a duplicate license ($15 fee). Missouri law treats the address-on-file as legally binding regardless of whether the printed card matches.

Updating the printed license

To have the new address printed on the license card, request a duplicate at any fee office. Bring:

  • The current Missouri driver's license.
  • Two proofs of the new Missouri residency dated within 30 days — utility bill, lease, mortgage statement, bank statement, or pay stub.
  • The $15 duplicate fee.

The new card is mailed in 7 to 10 business days; a paper interim license is issued at the fee office. Drivers moving from another state should follow the new resident license procedure rather than the address change.

Updating vehicle registration after a move

The DOR online address update covers every vehicle registration on the same record. The DOR mails new registration documents and address-corrected stickers to the new address, but the existing plates and stickers remain valid until the next renewal. There is no separate fee for updating registration addresses, even when multiple vehicles are involved.

If you move out of state and surrender the Missouri license to your new state's DMV, the old Missouri registration must be canceled by surrendering the plates to a fee office or by mailing them with a written cancellation request. Failure to cancel can leave the registration on Missouri's records and trigger continued personal property tax billing — see the registration renewal page for the steps that apply.

Name change after marriage

To change the name on a Missouri driver's license after a marriage, visit any fee office with:

  • The original or certified copy of the marriage license issued by a county recorder of deeds.
  • The current driver's license.
  • One proof of Missouri residency dated within 30 days.
  • The $15 duplicate license fee.

The DOR updates the license record, prints an interim license with the new name, and mails the new permanent card within 7 to 10 business days. Photocopies and digital images of the marriage license are not accepted — only certified originals.

Name change after divorce

A Missouri divorce that restores a former legal name requires the divorce decree to specifically order the name restoration. Bring to the fee office:

  • A certified copy of the divorce decree showing the name restoration order.
  • The current driver's license.
  • One proof of Missouri residency dated within 30 days.
  • The $15 duplicate license fee.

If the decree does not include a name restoration, the applicant must petition a Missouri circuit court for a separate name change order before the DOR can update the record.

Name change by court order

Any other legal name change (gender marker change, generational change, court-ordered correction) requires a certified court order from a Missouri circuit court. The DOR processes the order using the same duplicate license procedure. The Social Security Administration record must be updated first — see ssa.gov — because the DOR verifies the new name against the SSA database during issuance.

Vehicle title and registration name changes follow a separate path. Submit Form DOR-108 (corrected title) with the certified court order or marriage/divorce documentation and the $8.50 title fee. The corrected title is mailed within 7 to 14 business days. See the title replacement page for the related process when the original title has also been lost or damaged.
