Missouri Vehicle Registration Renewal

Missouri vehicle registrations renew on a 1-year or 2-year cycle (the registered owner chooses at the time of renewal). The Missouri Department of Revenue sends a renewal notice 60 days before expiration and offers three renewal channels: online through the DOR portal, by mail, or in person at any of the 174 fee offices.

Renewal notice

The DOR mails a renewal notice that lists the vehicle, the calculated renewal amount based on horsepower and any local taxes, and a renewal access code. If you do not receive the notice — for example after a recent move — you can still renew using the title number and license plate on the DOR portal. See the address change page if a missed notice is part of a wider address update with the DOR.

Online renewal

The DOR's online renewal system handles most passenger vehicle renewals in five to ten minutes. To use it, the vehicle must:

  • Have a valid Missouri title with no recent ownership change pending.
  • Be covered by current Missouri insurance — the DOR pings the carrier database for proof of 25/50/25 liability.
  • Have a current Missouri safety inspection certificate (issued within 60 days, if required).
  • Have a current emissions certificate if registered in one of the five Gateway counties (St. Louis City, St. Louis County, Franklin, Jefferson, or St. Charles).
  • Have a personal property tax receipt or non-assessment statement on file for the prior tax year.

Payment is by credit card, debit card, or electronic check. The new tabs are mailed within 7 to 14 business days; print the temporary receipt and keep it in the vehicle.

Mail renewal

Mail renewal is one of the most-used channels in Missouri. Send the renewal notice with:

  • A check or money order for the renewal amount.
  • A photocopy of the current safety inspection certificate.
  • A photocopy of the personal property tax receipt or non-assessment statement.
  • A photocopy of an emissions certificate if applicable.
  • Proof of insurance — typically a photocopy of the insurance ID card.

Mail to the DOR Motor Vehicle Bureau in Jefferson City. Renewal tabs arrive in 14 to 21 days. Submit at least three weeks before expiration to avoid driving on expired plates.

Fee office renewal

An in-person renewal at a fee office is required when:

  • The vehicle has changed ownership in the past year.
  • The personal property tax payment is missing or disputed.
  • The safety inspection failed and a re-inspection is needed.
  • You want to switch from a standard plate to a specialty or personalized plate.
  • The renewal includes a name change, address change, or transfer of plates between vehicles.

Bring all the documents listed above plus the current renewal notice. The fee office prints the new tabs on the spot and provides a receipt.

1-year vs. 2-year registration

Missouri allows the owner to choose between a 1-year and a 2-year registration at the time of renewal. The 2-year option doubles the registration fee but waives one safety inspection and one personal property tax cycle inside the registration window — the DOR still requires the inspection and property tax to be current at the time of renewal, but a 2-year registration locks in the registration period and reduces the renewal frequency.

Personal property tax receipt

Missouri renewals are uniquely tied to the county personal property tax. Before any renewal, the DOR verifies that the registered owner has paid the prior year's personal property tax to the county collector — or holds a non-assessment statement (for new residents and new owners). The receipt is presented at the fee office or uploaded through the online portal. New residents who arrived after January 1 of the prior year should request a non-assessment from the county before attempting to renew.

Late renewal

Missouri imposes a $25 per 30-day late fee, capped at $200. Driving on expired plates is a Class C misdemeanor. After a registration is more than 1 year expired, the DOR cancels the registration; reinstating requires a fresh title application and full registration as if registering the vehicle for the first time — see the Missouri car registration page.

If you sell the vehicle before the renewal date, Missouri allows the plate to stay with the seller (similar to most states). Keep the plate to transfer to a replacement vehicle within 30 days or surrender it to a fee office. The buyer titles and registers the vehicle in their own name using the title transfer procedure.
