Renewing a New Jersey Driver's License
New Jersey driver's licenses run on a 4-year cycle. The expiration date prints on the front of the card. NJ MVC sends a courtesy renewal notice about 60 days before expiration to the address on file, but the legal duty to renew remains the driver's regardless of whether the postcard arrives.
Renewal options
New Jersey offers three renewal paths:
- Online through the MVC online portal — available to most drivers who already have a digital photo on file from the prior cycle and whose address has not changed.
- By mail using the renewal coupon attached to the courtesy notice — limited to drivers who hold a non-REAL ID license and who skip the photo update cycle.
- In person at any NJ MVC vehicle agency — required for the photo-update cycle, REAL ID upgrades, expired licenses, and any name change.
The photo-update cycle
NJ MVC requires every driver to take a new photo at least every 8 years. Because the license cycle is 4 years, this typically means an in-person renewal every other cycle. Drivers who rolled to a digital photo at the last in-person visit may renew the alternating cycle online or by mail. The MVC renewal notice flags the cycle that requires an in-person photo update.
REAL ID upgrade
A REAL ID driver license is a federally compliant card marked with a small gold star. Without REAL ID, a driver license cannot be used to board a domestic flight or enter a federal building after the federal enforcement deadline. To upgrade to REAL ID at renewal, bring documents totaling 6 points from the MVC identity matrix plus proof of address. The upgrade does not cost extra — it shares the standard renewal fee — but it does require an in-person visit. See NJ driver's license for the 6-point list.
Documents for in-person renewal
- The renewal notice or current license.
- For REAL ID: birth certificate or U.S. passport, Social Security card or W-2, two proofs of NJ address dated within the last 90 days.
- For a name change: certified marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order in the legal name change.
Fees
The standard New Jersey license renewal fee is $24 for a 4-year Class D license. Specialty endorsements (motorcycle, hazmat) carry small additional fees. There is no extra charge to switch to REAL ID, although the in-person visit replaces an online renewal that might otherwise have been skipped.
Vision screening
NJ MVC requires a vision screening at every in-person renewal. Drivers who fail the screening are referred to an optometrist; the optometrist's signed statement on form SR-1 can be submitted to clear the vision flag. Drivers with corrective lenses must show that their license carries the appropriate restriction code.
Expired license
NJ MVC allows online renewal for licenses up to 1 year past expiration in many cases. Beyond 1 year, the renewal must be completed in person and the driver may be required to retake the knowledge test or vision screening. Driving with an expired license is a $54 fine plus court costs and 0 points (a non-moving violation).
Senior driver renewal
New Jersey does not impose extra renewal requirements based on age — there is no shortened cycle, no mandatory in-person visit beyond the 8-year photo, and no road retest requirement. Drivers over 80 do receive a vision-screening reminder more often, but the standard 4-year cycle continues.
Address change at renewal
If a driver moves between renewal cycles, the address change has to be reported to MVC within 1 week of the move regardless of the renewal status. The change can be completed online for free or in person at renewal. See NJ address change for the full process.
Reinstatement after suspension
Renewing a license that is currently suspended or revoked is not allowed — the suspension or revocation must be cleared first through restoration steps and any unpaid surcharges. If the underlying issue is point accumulation or DWI, the steps include payment of restoration fees, an SR-22 filing, and any required DWI program completion.
Most New Jersey drivers complete renewal entirely online and never set foot in an MVC agency more than once every 8 years. Plan an in-person visit for any photo-update cycle, REAL ID upgrade, expired card, or name change.
