Other Vehicle Registrations in New Jersey
Beyond standard passenger cars, NJ MVC titles and registers motorcycles, mopeds, low-speed vehicles, trailers of every weight class, recreational vehicles (RVs), historic-plate vehicles, and farm-use vehicles. Each category has its own fee schedule, plate type, and special equipment requirements.
Motorcycles
A New Jersey motorcycle requires a separate motorcycle endorsement on the operator's license, a title, and a registration with NJ MVC. The endorsement is added to the standard Class D license after passing a written motorcycle test and a riding test on a designated course. NJ honors motorcycle safety course completion (BRC) in lieu of the riding test for first-time endorsements.
Annual motorcycle registration: $65 for a standard motorcycle. Title fee: $60 (no lien) or $85 (with lien). NJ does not require an annual inspection for motorcycles. Motorcycles are exempt from the biennial emissions inspection that applies to passenger cars — see NJ registration renewal.
Mopeds
New Jersey defines a moped as a motorized two-wheel vehicle with a top speed under 25 mph and an engine under 50cc. Mopeds require:
- A NJ driver's license or moped operator's license (a Class M).
- A NJ moped registration — annual fee approximately $5.
- A NJ title (the standard $60 title fee applies).
- NJ-compliant insurance.
- A blue moped license plate.
Mopeds may be ridden in standard traffic but not on limited-access highways. They are not subject to inspection.
Low-speed vehicles
New Jersey defines a low-speed vehicle (LSV) as a four-wheel vehicle with a top speed of 25 mph and a Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 500 compliance label. LSVs require a standard NJ title, registration, and Class D operator's license. They may be operated only on streets with a posted speed limit of 35 mph or less.
Trailers
NJ MVC titles all trailers, including utility, boat, RV, and horse trailers. Trailer registration is annual and the fee depends on weight:
- Trailer ≤ 2,000 pounds: $10 per year.
- Trailer 2,001-3,000 pounds: $15 per year.
- Trailer 3,001-5,000 pounds: $20 per year.
- Trailer 5,001-10,000 pounds: $32 per year.
- Trailer over 10,000 pounds: based on registered gross weight.
Trailers without brakes that exceed 3,000 pounds must add brakes to be NJ-legal. Boat trailers are titled separately from the boat itself.
Recreational vehicles (RVs)
Motor-home RVs in New Jersey title and register as motor vehicles. The annual fee is based on weight class — most Class A motor homes fall in the 8,500-15,000-pound weight band with annual fees of $84-$92. Class C motor homes typically fall in the 5,001-7,000-pound band at $59 per year. Travel trailers and 5th wheels register as trailers using the trailer fee schedule above.
RVs over 10,000 pounds GVWR may require a Class A CDL for non-recreational commercial use; recreational use does not require a CDL even at higher weights.
Historic-plate vehicles
NJ MVC issues Historic Vehicle plates to vehicles 25 model years old or older that are kept primarily for exhibition, club activity, parade, or limited recreational use. The plate carries a one-time fee of $41 and an annual renewal of $5. Historic-plate vehicles:
- Cannot be used for daily commuting.
- Are exempt from the biennial inspection.
- Pay the standard title fee at issuance.
- Must carry NJ-compliant insurance, often with reduced "agreed-value" classic-car policies.
Farm-use vehicles
Vehicles used primarily for farming on a NJ-registered agricultural operation can register under farm-use plates at reduced fees. Farm trucks and farm trailers carry capped weight-based fees and are exempt from emissions inspection. The vehicle must be used for farming at least 75% of operating miles to qualify, and the registrant must show proof of the agricultural operation through tax records or the NJ Department of Agriculture certification.
Off-highway vehicles
ATVs, snowmobiles, and dirt bikes are titled and registered through NJ MVC under the Off-Highway Vehicle program. Annual registration: $25-$35 depending on category. These vehicles cannot be operated on public roads regardless of registration status, with limited exceptions for crossing roads at right angles. Off-highway registrations also require liability insurance for trail riding on state lands.
Each specialty registration category has its own form and supporting documentation. Plan an in-person visit at a NJ MVC vehicle agency that handles registration work — not every agency processes specialty plates. See NJ vehicle registration for the standard passenger-car process.
