Getting a New Mexico Driver's License
The standard New Mexico driver's license is issued by MVD New Mexico, the state's Motor Vehicle Division within the Taxation and Revenue Department. The application uses Form MVD-10018, and applicants choose between a 4-year or 8-year license cycle at issuance — one of the few states in the country to offer both options.
Eligibility
To qualify for an unrestricted New Mexico driver's license, the applicant must be at least 16 years and 6 months old and have completed the graduated driver licensing program: a 30-hour driver education course, an instruction permit held for at least 6 months, a 50-hour supervised driving log (10 hours at night), and a provisional license held without a moving violation conviction. Adults 18 and older may apply directly without the provisional intermediate stage but still need a permit and a passed road exam.
New Mexico also offers a "driving authorization card" for residents who cannot prove lawful presence in the United States but who can verify identity and New Mexico residency. The driving authorization card is not a federal REAL ID and is marked accordingly, but it allows lawful operation of a motor vehicle on New Mexico roads.
Documents required
For a federally compliant REAL ID New Mexico license (recognized by the small star in the upper right corner), bring originals of:
- One proof of identity and lawful presence — certified U.S. birth certificate, valid U.S. passport, or Permanent Resident Card.
- Proof of Social Security number — Social Security card, W-2, or pay stub showing the full number.
- Two proofs of New Mexico residency from two different sources, dated within the last 60 days — utility bill, lease, mortgage statement, bank statement, or vehicle insurance card.
- If the name on the identity document differs from your legal name, certified marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order documenting the change.
Photocopies are not accepted at first issuance. State and partner offices both follow the same document standards.
Choosing 4-year or 8-year
New Mexico is unusual in offering a choice at issuance:
- 4-year license: lower up-front fee, more frequent renewals.
- 8-year license: higher up-front fee, longer time between renewals.
Drivers who plan to keep the license through one or more federal travel cycles often pick the 8-year option for convenience. Drivers under 25 are limited to the 4-year option.
Fees
The 4-year license fee is approximately $18; the 8-year fee is approximately $34. Drivers who add a REAL ID upgrade pay no extra fee at issuance. The fee covers the knowledge test, vision screen, and one road test attempt. A retest after a failed road exam costs an additional small fee.
Knowledge test
The MVD New Mexico knowledge test contains 25 multiple-choice questions drawn from the New Mexico Driver Manual. Applicants must answer at least 18 correctly (a 72% passing score). Topics emphasized: right-of-way at uncontrolled intersections, mountainous-road driving (downhill braking), school-zone speed limits, hands-free phone law, and DWI thresholds. The test is offered in English, Spanish, and several other languages at most state offices and many partner offices.
Road exam
The road exam runs about 15-20 minutes and is administered by an MVD examiner using a vehicle the applicant supplies. The examiner evaluates:
- Pre-drive vehicle inspection (signals, brakes, mirrors).
- Three-point turn or backing maneuver.
- Lane change with mirror and head check.
- Right and left turns from the correct lane.
- Smooth stops at signs and signals.
- Speed control on residential and arterial streets.
Common failures: rolling stops, missed head checks during lane changes, and turning from the wrong lane. Bring a vehicle that is currently registered with proof of New Mexico insurance meeting 25/50/10.
License delivery
You will receive a printed paper temporary license at the office, valid for up to 45 days. The permanent card is printed centrally and mailed in 10-15 business days. If the card has not arrived after 30 days, contact MVD New Mexico through the customer service line. Cards returned for an address mismatch can be reprinted at no charge if the address on file is corrected within 60 days.
Renewals and address moves
The 4-year and 8-year licenses are renewable online for one cycle before an in-person visit is required for a fresh photo. License renewal is covered in detail on the renewal page. New Mexico residents who change address must update the license within 30 days — see address and name change.
