Renewing New Mexico Vehicle Registration

New Mexico vehicle registration may be issued for a 1-year or 2-year period; the registrant chooses at issuance and at each renewal. MVD New Mexico mails a renewal notice approximately 30 days before expiration that lists the registration fee, the Tire Recycling Fee, the Vehicle Theft Prevention Authority Fee, and any emissions requirement that applies. Most owners can finish the transaction online; partner offices remain open for in-person renewals when that is more convenient.

When to renew online

Online renewal through the MVD New Mexico portal works for most passenger vehicles when:

  • The current registration is not yet expired (or is fewer than 30 days past expiration).
  • There is no name change, address change, or lienholder change in process.
  • New Mexico liability insurance meeting 25/50/10 minimums is in force.
  • No vehicle ownership change has occurred since the last renewal.
  • For Bernalillo County registrants, a current passing emissions certificate is on file.

The portal asks for the renewal notice number, license plate, and last six digits of the VIN. The new sticker arrives by mail in 7-10 business days; the registrant can print a temporary receipt for the windshield in the meantime.

Bernalillo County emissions requirement

Vehicles registered to a Bernalillo County (Albuquerque metro) address must pass an emissions test before each registration renewal. Emissions test stations transmit results electronically to MVD New Mexico, so most Bernalillo registrants do not need to bring a paper certificate to the renewal. Vehicles less than 4 years old, electric vehicles, motorcycles, and vehicles registered outside the county are exempt.

When to renew at an MVD or partner office

Walk-in renewal is required when:

  • The vehicle is being registered in New Mexico for the first time.
  • There is a title transfer associated with the renewal.
  • The owner is changing the address or adding a lienholder.
  • The owner needs replacement plates or a duplicate sticker.
  • The renewal is more than 30 days late and the system rejects the online transaction.

Partner offices — MVD Express, Easy MVD, and other licensed providers — accept walk-ins and same-day visits and typically have substantially shorter wait times than state offices in the busiest metro areas. Service fees of $10-$30 apply on top of the state fees.

What you pay each year

The annual renewal bill includes:

  • Registration fee — tiered by vehicle weight; most passenger cars pay $27-$62 per year.
  • Tire Recycling Fee and Vehicle Theft Prevention Authority Fee — small annual surcharges.
  • Partner office service fee if the renewal is processed at a partner location.
  • Emissions test cost for Bernalillo County registrants ($20-$25, paid separately at the testing station).

Vehicles 26 years or older may register at a flat antique-vehicle rate. Heavy-duty pickups and commercial-class light trucks pay higher tiered fees based on declared gross vehicle weight.

Late renewals

Driving on an expired New Mexico registration is an offense and can be cited at any traffic stop. The MVD or partner office will accept a late renewal at any time, but a penalty plus interest applies starting day 31 past expiration. Vehicles that are not driven during a registration lapse cannot be retroactively excused; the full registration period must be paid.

Out-of-state addresses and military

New Mexico residents temporarily out of state can renew online and have the new sticker mailed to a forwarding address. Active-duty military members stationed outside New Mexico may continue to register their vehicles in New Mexico indefinitely. If the vehicle is permanently moved to another state, the owner should not renew the New Mexico registration; instead, surrender New Mexico plates by mail to MVD New Mexico.

Replacement plates and stickers

Replacement registration cards and stickers are available online for a small fee, and replacement plates can be ordered at a state or partner office. If the original plates were stolen, file a police report first and bring the report number to the MVD office for a no-charge plate replacement. Pull a current copy of your driver record separately if you need to confirm the registration record matches MVD New Mexico's records after a renewal or replacement.
