Renewing a North Carolina Driver License
A North Carolina driver license is good for 8 years for adults 18 to 65, and 5 years for drivers 66 and older. Renewal can be completed online once per cycle for most drivers; the alternate cycle requires an in-person visit for an updated photo and vision screening. The NC DMV mails a renewal notice about 60 days before expiration.
The renewal window
NC drivers can renew up to 180 days before the expiration date printed on the card. The renewal date itself is the holder's birthday — a driver born September 4 will see their license expire on September 4 of the renewal year. There is no formal grace period after expiration; driving on an expired license is a Class 3 misdemeanor and a citable violation. Drivers can still renew up to 2 years past expiration without retesting, but they cannot legally drive until the renewal is complete.
Renewing online
The NC DMV's online renewal portal handles standard adult renewals when:
- The driver currently holds a valid (non-suspended) NC license.
- The driver is between 18 and 65 years old.
- The previous renewal was completed in person, providing a recent photo and vision screening on file.
- The driver has not changed name since the last renewal.
- The driver does not need to upgrade to REAL ID.
The online renewal fee is $5.50 per year ($44 for 8 years), payable by credit or debit card. The new card is mailed in 7 to 14 business days. The portal also issues a downloadable temporary credential good for 60 days while the printed card arrives.
Renewing in person
An in-person visit at any NC DMV driver license office is required when:
- The driver is upgrading to a REAL ID-compliant card with the gold star.
- The previous renewal was completed online.
- The driver has changed name since the last renewal.
- The driver is 66 or older — NC requires in-person renewal at every 5-year senior cycle.
- The driver has a medical condition or vision change that requires reassessment.
Bring proof of identity, Social Security number, and two proofs of NC residency dated within the last 60 days. Same documents as a first-time issuance for the REAL ID upgrade. The fee is the same $44 for an 8-year card or $27.50 for a 5-year senior card.
Vision screening
Every in-person renewal requires a vision screening. The NC DMV standard is 20/40 in at least one eye, with or without corrective lenses. Drivers who fail the screening can present a recent eye exam from a licensed optometrist as an alternative. Drivers requiring corrective lenses receive an "01" restriction on the card; bioptic users receive an "02" restriction.
Senior renewal — age 66+
North Carolina requires drivers 66 and older to renew every 5 years and complete an in-person visit at each renewal. There is no road test for seniors with a clean record, but the DMV does run a more thorough vision screening and may refer drivers with certain medical histories for additional review. Drivers can also self-refer if they have concerns about their fitness to drive — the DMV's Medical Review Branch handles those cases confidentially.
REAL ID upgrade
Upgrading to a REAL ID at renewal requires the same documents as a first-time issuance: certified birth certificate or U.S. passport, Social Security number proof, and two proofs of NC residency. The REAL ID has a small gold star in the upper right corner. Federal agencies require a REAL ID or another federal ID (passport, military ID) to board domestic flights and enter federal facilities after May 7, 2025. Drivers who have a passport may not need to upgrade.
Renewing while out of state
NC drivers stationed out of state for work, military service, or college can request a renewal extension by submitting Form DL-79 to the NC DMV. The DMV issues a temporary extension valid for up to one year, after which the driver must renew at a license office within 60 days of returning to the state. Active-duty military and dependents are exempt from renewal as long as the duty assignment continues.
Address change at renewal
If the driver moved since the last renewal, the address must be updated. Address changes can be filed online through the NC DMV portal or in person at any license office. NC law requires drivers to update both the license and the registration within 60 days of moving — see address change. Renewing without updating the address sends the new card to the old address and creates a re-mail delay.
What the new card looks like
NC licenses are horizontal for adult holders and vertical for under-21 drivers. REAL ID cards display the gold star; non-compliant cards display "NOT FOR FEDERAL ID." The card now shows organ-donor status, motorcycle endorsements, and any restriction codes alongside standard ID information. See the NC DMV hub for the latest credential design and federal compliance notice.
