NC Address & Name Changes
North Carolina law requires drivers to update both the address on the driver license and the address on every vehicle registration within 60 days of moving. Name changes after marriage, divorce, or court order have a 60-day deadline as well, once the supporting document is in hand. Both updates pass through the NC DMV — but the document requirements and the available channels differ.
Address change — the 60-day rule
Under §20-7.1, every NC licensed driver and registered vehicle owner must notify the DMV within 60 days of moving. The change applies to:
- The NC driver license or state ID address.
- Each registered vehicle's address (used for renewal notices and county property tax records).
- The address on file for any active suspension or court order.
The address printed on the license card itself does not have to be reprinted unless the driver requests a duplicate — NC updates the DMV record electronically. Drivers who want a fresh card with the new address printed pay the standard $13 duplicate fee.
Three ways to update an address
Online: The NC DMV's myNCDMV portal handles licenses, state IDs, and vehicle registrations in a single transaction. Free for the DMV record update; a fee applies if a printed card is requested. Same applies to vehicle registration address updates.
By mail: Submit the address change form to the NC DMV in Raleigh. Free for the record update.
In person: Visit any NC DMV driver license office (for license updates) or any LPA (for vehicle registration) with proof of the new address. The clerk updates the record on the spot.
Acceptable proof of address
Drivers updating in person or upgrading to REAL ID need two proofs of NC residency from two different sources, each dated within the last 60 days:
- Utility bill (electric, gas, water, internet, cable).
- Bank or credit card statement.
- Pay stub showing the new address.
- Lease or mortgage statement.
- Voter registration or government correspondence.
- Insurance bill or declaration page.
- School enrollment letter (for under-25 drivers receiving mail at parent's address).
Online address changes typically do not require document upload — the NC DMV verifies through postal records and prior data on file.
Name change — supporting documents
To change the legal name on an NC license or registration, the DMV requires the original or a certified copy of:
- Marriage: certified marriage certificate.
- Divorce: divorce decree showing the name change order.
- Court-ordered name change: certified order from the clerk of superior court.
- Adoption: certified adoption order.
- Naturalization: updated U.S. naturalization certificate or passport showing the new name.
Photocopies are not accepted; the DMV requires the original or a court-certified copy. The license office examines and returns the original after recording.
In-person process for name change
Name changes cannot be completed online — they require a visit to any NC DMV driver license office. Bring:
- Current NC driver license or state ID.
- Original Social Security card showing the new name (the Social Security Administration must be updated before the NC DMV).
- Certified court order, marriage certificate, or divorce decree.
- Current proof of NC residency (utility bill or bank statement).
- Fee for a duplicate license — $13.
The order matters. Update the Social Security Administration first; the SSA links the new name to the existing SSN, and the NC DMV verifies through the federal Social Security database before issuing the new card.
Updating vehicle registration after a name change
The vehicle title and registration must reflect the new name as well. Take the new license, marriage certificate or court order, and current registration to any LPA. The LPA processes a duplicate title at $20 plus the standard $56 title fee, and updates the registration record. Total cost is typically $76 for a name correction on a single vehicle. Multi-vehicle households can update each title separately or wait until the next sale or transfer.
Insurance and address
NC insurance carriers rate by ZIP code, so a move can change the premium up or down. Notify the insurer of the new address before the DMV update, since the DMV's verification system checks coverage at the new address starting on the recorded change date. See NC car insurance for the typical impact of a move.
Voter registration and other agencies
NC's DMV transmits address changes to the State Board of Elections for voter registration purposes through the National Voter Registration Act ("Motor Voter") interface. The change posts to the voter file in 2 to 4 weeks. Drivers should still verify at their county board of elections before the next election. Other agencies — vehicle insurance, IRS, USPS, and toll authorities — must be updated separately.
New residents from other states
New NC residents have 60 days to surrender any out-of-state license and apply for an NC license at any driver license office. The application requires the documents listed for first-time issuance plus surrender of the out-of-state credential. The new resident's driving record is requested electronically from the prior state. Vehicle registration must be updated within the same 60 days through any LPA.
