South Dakota License Renewal
A South Dakota operator license expires on the holder's birthday. Most adults renew on a 5-year cycle; drivers under 21 renew on a 3-year cycle. The renewal can be completed online every other cycle for most adult drivers, with an in-person visit required at least every 10 years to refresh the photograph and biometric data on file with SD DPS.
When to renew
The SD DPS mails a renewal notice to the address on file roughly 60 days before the license expires. You may renew up to 180 days before the expiration date without losing the original anniversary - the new card simply extends the same birthday-based cycle. If you let the license expire, you have a 30-day grace period to renew without a road test, but you cannot legally drive during that grace period unless your previous license is still valid on its face.
Online renewal eligibility
You can renew online through the SD DPS portal if all of the following apply:
- Your previous renewal was done in person (the system rotates online and in-person every other cycle for security and photo-refresh purposes).
- Your address has not changed.
- You do not have any holds, suspensions, or revocations - see suspended license for what triggers a hold.
- You are not changing your name.
- You are not upgrading to a REAL ID for the first time (REAL ID upgrades require an in-person visit).
- Your current license is not within 30 days of expiration or already expired.
In-person renewal
If online renewal is not available, you can renew at any SD DPS driver licensing exam station. Bring your current license, payment for the renewal fee, and identity documents if you are upgrading to REAL ID. The vision screening is administered at the counter; corrective lens restrictions are added or removed based on the screening result. A new photograph is taken on every in-person renewal. The new card is mailed in 2-4 weeks; you walk out with a temporary paper credential valid for 30 days.
Mail renewal for out-of-state residents
South Dakota residents temporarily out of state - active-duty military, college students, long-haul truckers - can renew by mail on a one-time basis per cycle. The driver requests a mail-renewal packet from SD DPS, returns the completed form with a vision screening certificate from a licensed optometrist, and receives the new card by mail. Mail renewal is not available to drivers physically present in South Dakota.
Renewal fees
- Standard 5-year operator license: $28.
- 3-year under-21 license: $20.
- REAL ID upgrade: included in the standard fee on first issuance.
- Replacement before expiration: $15.
- Late renewal (within 30-day grace period): standard fee, no penalty.
Vision and medical screening
Every in-person renewal includes a vision screening. Drivers with vision below the minimum standard can be issued a corrective-lens restriction or, in more serious cases, a daytime-only restriction. Drivers with certain medical conditions - epilepsy, syncope, untreated sleep apnea - may be required to submit a medical examination report before the license is renewed. Senior drivers do not face a separate vision standard, but the in-person visit becomes mandatory at age 65.
Address changes at renewal
If your address has changed, the renewal must be done in person and the new address replaces the previous one on the operator license. South Dakota allows you to update your address on the address and name change page or at the same renewal visit. The SD DPS uses the address on file for any administrative correspondence including license suspension notices, so an out-of-date address can lead to missed deadlines.
What happens if you let the license expire
If your South Dakota license has been expired for more than one year, you must apply as a new driver - including the knowledge exam and possibly the road skills test. The fees reset to first-time issuance levels, and any restrictions from the previous license may need to be re-validated. To avoid this, set a calendar reminder on your birthday in your renewal year, or take advantage of the 180-day early renewal window.
