South Dakota Address & Name Change

When you move within South Dakota or change your legal name, the SD Department of Public Safety requires you to update your driver license, and the SD Department of Revenue requires you to update vehicle registration. Both updates are simple but time-sensitive - South Dakota law requires the updates within 30 days of the change.

Updating your address with SD DPS

You can update your South Dakota driver license address through one of the following channels:

  • Online through the SD DPS portal - the fastest option for most drivers, requires login with the current license number.
  • By mail - send a signed change-of-address notice to SD DPS in Pierre with your name, license number, old address, and new address.
  • In person at any SD DPS exam station - bring two proofs of new South Dakota residency (utility bill, bank statement, lease, mortgage statement, voter registration).

An online or mail address update does not produce a new physical license card; the change is reflected in the SD DPS database. To get a card with the new address printed on it, request a duplicate at any exam station for the $15 replacement fee.

Updating your address with the county treasurer

Vehicle registration address updates are processed by the county treasurer. If you stay in the same county, the treasurer simply updates the registration record and the change is reflected on the next renewal notice. If you move to a new county, the new county treasurer takes over the record and may issue a new license plate at the next renewal reflecting the new county code.

Why a current address matters

  • SD DPS sends notices of suspension, license expiration, and administrative actions to your address of record. A missed notice does not pause the suspension - the date still applies.
  • The county treasurer mails registration renewal notices to your address of record.
  • Insurance carriers price coverage in part on garage location, so an out-of-date address can lead to underrating that voids coverage at claim time. See South Dakota car insurance.
  • Court summonses and jury notices use the SD DPS address.

Changing your name on a South Dakota license

A legal name change requires an in-person visit to an SD DPS exam station. Bring:

  • The original or certified copy of the document supporting the change - marriage license, divorce decree, court order of name change, certified amended birth certificate.
  • Your current South Dakota driver license.
  • Form SD-EX-101 marked for a name change.
  • The $15 duplicate license fee.

SD DPS issues a temporary paper license at the counter; the new card with the updated name arrives by mail in 2-4 weeks. Photocopies of the underlying name-change document are not accepted - bring the certified original.

Changing your name on the vehicle title and registration

After updating the name on your driver license, head to the county treasurer to update vehicle title and registration. Bring the new license, the current title and registration, and the underlying name-change document. The county treasurer reissues the title with the new name (a duplicate title is filed) and updates the registration record. The title fee is $10; no excise tax applies because the name change is not a sale.

Name change with a lien

If your South Dakota title is held by a lender, contact the lender first. The lender holds the title until the loan is paid off, but a name change is recorded electronically with SD DOR. The lender may also require updated loan documents matching the new legal name, and your auto insurance policy must be updated to match.

Joint owner name changes

If the title lists multiple owners (for example, "John AND Jane Smith"), each owner's name change must be processed individually with separate underlying documents. Both owners need to be present at the county treasurer when the title is reissued unless one provides notarized authorization for the change.

Other agencies to update

  • U.S. Postal Service - file a change-of-address online for forwarding mail.
  • Social Security Administration - update your name with the SSA before SD DPS for many state systems to verify cleanly.
  • South Dakota Secretary of State - voter registration updates can be filed online.
  • Insurance carrier - make sure the address on your auto policy matches the SD DPS record.
  • Employer and IRS - update payroll and tax records to match.
