South Dakota Registration Renewal
South Dakota vehicle registration expires on the last day of the owner's birth month. Renewals are processed by the county treasurer in the owner's home county, with statewide policy from the SD Department of Revenue - Motor Vehicle Division. Most renewals can be completed online through the MySDCars portal, by mail, or at the treasurer's counter.
When to renew
The county treasurer mails a renewal notice about 60 days before expiration. The notice lists the vehicle, the registration period, the fees due, and any wheel tax or specialty plate surcharges that apply. You can renew up to 90 days early without losing the original anniversary - the new period simply extends the same birthday-month cycle. If you let registration lapse, a late fee applies and law enforcement can issue an expired-tag citation under SDCL § 32-5.
Online renewal through MySDCars
South Dakota's MySDCars portal handles registration renewal for most passenger vehicles, motorcycles, and light trucks. You log in with your renewal notice number or vehicle identifier, confirm address and insurance, pay with a card, and receive the renewal decal by mail in 5-10 business days. The portal handles state fees, county wheel tax, and specialty plate surcharges in one transaction. The system supports multiple vehicles in a single household.
In-person renewal at the county treasurer
Walk-in renewal is available at every county treasurer office. Bring your renewal notice (or VIN and plate number), proof of South Dakota auto insurance, and payment. Some smaller treasurer offices accept cash or check only - call ahead if you intend to pay by card. The treasurer issues a new decal and registration certificate at the counter. Insurance is verified electronically with most major carriers.
Mail renewal
Mail renewal is also accepted. Mail the renewal notice with a check for the total amount due and a copy of your insurance card to your county treasurer's office. The new decal and registration certificate are mailed back, typically within 7-14 business days. Add extra time during peak renewal months. Mail is the slowest option but works well for ranchers and rural residents who do not need a same-day decal.
Renewal fees
- Annual registration: $60-$120 for a passenger car based on age and weight, with reduced rates for older vehicles.
- Wheel tax: varies by county, typically $4 per wheel up to a per-vehicle cap; some counties do not charge wheel tax.
- Specialty or vanity plate surcharge: $10-$25 annually depending on plate type.
- Late renewal penalty: $1 per month of expired tags, up to a cap.
- Replacement decal: $5.
Address and insurance updates at renewal
If your address has changed since the last renewal, update it before processing - the renewal notice and registration certificate must match your current South Dakota address. You can update online through MySDCars or at the treasurer's counter. South Dakota requires continuous proof of insurance under the 25/50/25 + UM 25/50 minimum, and the system flags vehicles whose insurance is reported lapsed by the carrier. See address and name change for details on updating address information statewide.
What renewal does not include
South Dakota does not require an annual safety inspection or emissions test for passenger vehicles, so the renewal process does not include an inspection step. There is no smog program, no biennial brake check, and no headlight aim certification. Drivers are still responsible for keeping the vehicle roadworthy under SDCL § 32-17, but the state does not gate registration behind a scheduled inspection visit.
What if you sold or moved the vehicle?
If you sold the vehicle, file form MV-005 - Seller's Report of Sale - so SD DOR can update the record and stop renewal notices. If you moved the vehicle out of state and registered it in the new state, mail or bring your South Dakota plates back to the county treasurer to close the registration record. Both steps protect you from future fees and keep your driver record clean.
