Wyoming Address & Name Change

Wyoming requires drivers to update their address with WYDOT within 10 days of moving, and to update vehicle registration with the county clerk at the next renewal or sooner if moving to a new county. Name changes after marriage or divorce require an in-person visit to a WYDOT examination office with court documentation.

Address change on your license

WYDOT requires drivers to report a change of address within 10 days. There are three ways to update:

  • Online through the WYDOT Driver Services portal. Free, instant update, and a new card is mailed within 2 weeks if you request a duplicate (about $5 fee).
  • By mail with a written notice to WYDOT Driver Services, Cheyenne. Include your full name, date of birth, license number, old address, and new address.
  • In person at any WYDOT examination office.

Address updates do not require a new card unless you specifically request one. The WYDOT system records the new address even if your card still shows the old one. However, a card with the wrong address can be questioned by some banks, lenders, or polling places, so most drivers request a duplicate.

Address change on vehicle registration

For vehicle registration, the county clerk handles the address update. If you've moved within the same county, update at the next registration renewal or by writing to the county clerk's office. If you've moved to a different Wyoming county, you'll typically need to register the vehicle in the new county at the next renewal — the new county clerk handles the transfer, recalculates the personal property tax, and issues new plates if needed.

Address change on the title

Wyoming titles do not need to be reissued for an address change. The new address is recorded in the county clerk's database and on the next registration card. If you need a corrected title (for example, before selling the vehicle), file MV-300D with the new address.

Name change after marriage

To change your name on a Wyoming license after marriage, visit any WYDOT examination office with:

  • Your current Wyoming driver's license.
  • A certified marriage certificate (a copy is not enough — the certificate must show the raised seal of the issuing authority).
  • Your Social Security card or evidence that the name has been updated with the Social Security Administration. The SSA must be updated before WYDOT, since WYDOT verifies names against SSA records electronically.
  • The duplicate license fee, approximately $5.

The new license is mailed within 2 weeks. Update vehicle registration and title at the same county clerk visit, or at the next registration renewal.

Name change after divorce

To restore a former name after divorce, visit a WYDOT office with:

  • The certified divorce decree showing the court order to restore the prior name.
  • Your current Wyoming driver's license.
  • Your Social Security card or evidence of the SSA name update.
  • The duplicate license fee.

If the decree does not specifically restore the former name, you'll need a separate name-change court order. Wyoming district courts process name-change petitions at modest cost.

Name change by court order (general)

For any other name change (gender confirmation, family name change, anglicization), Wyoming requires a name-change order from a district court. After the order is final:

  • Update the SSA first.
  • Visit a WYDOT examination office with the certified court order, the current license, and SSA evidence.
  • WYDOT issues a new license with the updated name; a duplicate fee applies.
  • Update vehicle registration and title at the county clerk; the title may need to be reissued depending on circumstances.

What to update after a move or name change

  1. WYDOT driver's license.
  2. County clerk for vehicle registration.
  3. Title (if needed).
  4. Voter registration with your county clerk.
  5. Auto insurance carrier (rate may change with new ZIP code).
  6. Vehicle lender, if there's an active loan.
  7. Wyoming hunting and fishing license records, if you hold them.

Pull a fresh driver record after about 30 days to confirm the name and address propagated through the system.
