Renewing a Delaware Driver's License

A standard Delaware driver's license is valid for 8 years. Delaware DMV mails a courtesy renewal reminder roughly 60 days before the expiration date, and most renewals can be completed online through the MyDMV portal without visiting an office. Drivers who don't qualify for online renewal — first-time REAL ID upgrades, name changes, vision concerns — visit any of Delaware's four DMV offices in Wilmington, New Castle, Dover, or Georgetown.

When to renew

Delaware licenses expire on the holder's birthday in the expiration year shown on the card. The Delaware DMV mails a courtesy renewal reminder to the address on file 60-90 days before expiration. Driving with an expired license is a citable offense, and Delaware law enforcement officers do enforce it. A Delaware license can be renewed up to 1 year before the expiration date without losing time off the new cycle.

Renewal options

Delaware allows online renewal for drivers who meet all of the following:

  • The current license is REAL ID-compliant (gold star in the upper right of the card).
  • The driver has not had a vision exam concern flagged by the DMV.
  • The driver has had no significant medical condition reported.
  • The driver does not need to update name, address, or photo at this renewal cycle.
  • The driver has had at least one in-person renewal at a DMV lane in the prior 8-year cycle (Delaware refreshes the photo at least every other cycle).

If you do not meet those criteria, you renew in person at any of the four Delaware DMV offices. First-time REAL ID upgrades, name changes after marriage or divorce, vision exam updates, and any cycle following an out-of-state move all require an in-person visit.

Documents for in-person renewal

If you're renewing in person — particularly for a REAL ID upgrade — bring the same federal document set used for a first-time Delaware driver's license:

  • One identity document (certified U.S. birth certificate or U.S. passport).
  • Proof of Social Security number (Social Security card, W-2, or SSA-1099).
  • Two proofs of Delaware residency dated within the last 60 days.
  • Marriage certificate or divorce decree if your name has changed.
  • Your current driver's license (or expired license, if within the grace period).

Vision and medical screening

Every in-person renewal includes a vision screening at the DMV counter. The standard is 20/40 corrected, with adequate field of vision. Drivers who fail the vision screening receive a referral to an optometrist or ophthalmologist for a Delaware Vision Screening Form, which the DMV will accept for issuance with a corrective-lens restriction code. Senior drivers have no automatic age-based shorter cycle in Delaware, but a flagged medical condition can shorten the cycle to 2-4 years.

Renewal fees

The Delaware standard 8-year renewal fee is approximately $40. Senior drivers and certain medical-condition cycles pay a prorated fee. All fees are payable in cash, debit, credit, or check at any Delaware DMV office; the MyDMV portal accepts debit and credit. The renewal sticker (or new card, depending on the renewal type) is mailed in 7-14 business days.

Late renewals

A Delaware license can be renewed up to 30 days after expiration without retesting and without a late penalty. Beyond 30 days, a late fee is added. If the license has been expired for more than 1 year, the Delaware DMV may require the driver to retake the knowledge test, the road test, or both. If the license has been expired for more than 2 years, full retesting is automatic, and the driver may need a temporary instruction permit during the testing period.

Active military and out-of-state residents

Delaware residents on active military duty stationed outside Delaware can usually renew online or by mail with proof of military status. Spouses of active-duty members are typically extended the same accommodation. The Delaware license remains valid during deployment as long as the holder is in compliance with federal license-protection statutes. See Delaware address and name change for the procedure to update the address on file before renewing.
