DC Other Vehicle Registrations
Beyond standard passenger cars, DC DMV registers a range of vehicles for road and limited road use: trailers, motorcycles, mopeds, low-speed vehicles, RVs, and specialty plates including military, organization, and historic categories. Each vehicle type has its own fee schedule, plate format, and inspection rules.
Trailers
DC trailers register at any DC DMV service center. The registration fee depends on the trailer's gross weight: small utility trailers under 1,500 pounds carry a flat low fee; medium trailers (1,500 to 4,500 pounds) pay a moderate fee; and larger trailers (over 4,500 pounds) pay weight-based commercial rates. Trailer titles also use form DMV-VR-200; trailers manufactured for resale typically come with a manufacturer's statement of origin (MSO) that the buyer presents to DC DMV for first titling. DC trailer plates are also subject to the 2-year renewal cycle.
Motorcycles
Motorcycle registration follows the same DMV-VR-100/DMV-VR-200 process as cars. Riders need a Class M endorsement on their DC driver's license — obtained by passing a separate motorcycle knowledge and skills test or by completing a Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) course. Motorcycle registration fees are typically lower than passenger vehicle fees ($30 to $60 for 2 years), and DC excise tax applies on motorcycle MSRP. Helmets are required for all riders in DC regardless of age.
Mopeds and motorized scooters
DC requires registration for mopeds and motorized scooters that operate on public roads at 30 mph or higher. Lower-power devices may not require registration but cannot operate on streets where the speed limit exceeds 25 mph. Riders need a Class D license or a Class M endorsement depending on the vehicle's motor and top speed. Helmets are required for all moped riders.
Low-speed vehicles (LSVs)
DC registers low-speed vehicles — typically golf-cart-style electric vehicles capable of 20 to 25 mph — for use on streets with speed limits at or below 35 mph. LSVs require a title, a registration, and an inspection at the MIB before plates are issued. Insurance and seatbelt rules apply.
RVs and motorhomes
Recreational vehicles (motorhomes, fifth wheels, travel trailers) register at any DC DMV service center. Motorhomes follow passenger-vehicle excise tax rules with the weight class generally putting them in the highest tax bracket (8%). Travel trailers and fifth wheels follow trailer rules. The MIB inspection applies for self-propelled RVs.
Antique and historic plates
DC offers historic plates for vehicles 25 years or older that are used primarily for exhibitions, parades, club activities, and occasional pleasure driving — not as a daily commuter. Historic-plated vehicles carry reduced annual fees compared to standard registration. Vehicles plated as historic are still subject to the DC liability and PIP minimums.
Commercial vehicles and CDL
DC DMV registers commercial vehicles (CMVs) over 26,000 pounds gross vehicle weight, plus any vehicle that hauls hazardous materials or carries 16 or more passengers. CDL drivers register and renew through DC DMV's commercial driver bureau, with federal medical certification required at every renewal.
Specialty and organization plates
DC offers a smaller catalog of specialty plates than most states, but the catalog includes:
- Veteran plates — multiple variants for branches of service.
- "Taxation Without Representation" — the standard DC slogan plate.
- Diplomatic plates — issued under State Department coordination, not DC DMV directly.
- Personalized plates — vanity numbers and letters subject to availability and a higher fee.
- Disabled person plates — DP-coded plates with handicap parking privileges.
Each specialty plate carries an additional fee. See DC DMV for the current plate options. For ongoing renewals on any plate type, follow the standard renewal process. For initial registration, see the car registration page; for related title work, see title transfer.
