Renewing Iowa Vehicle Registration

Iowa vehicle registration renews annually, with the expiration tied to the registered owner's birth month. The county treasurer in your home county handles the renewal — online, by mail, or in person — and the fee depends on the vehicle's age, weight, and original list price. Iowa does not require an annual safety or emissions inspection, so renewal is generally a simple fee payment.

When to renew

Iowa registration expires on the last day of the registered owner's birth month. The county treasurer mails a renewal notice approximately 60 days before expiration to the address on file — keeping that address current is required by Iowa law within 30 days of any move. You can renew up to 60 days before expiration without losing time on the new registration.

Driving on expired tags in Iowa carries late penalties:

  • 5% of the renewal fee (minimum $5) for renewal in the first month after expiration.
  • An additional 5% for each subsequent month.
  • Possible citation if stopped while driving on expired plates.

Online renewal

Most Iowa county treasurers participate in the state's online renewal portal. Online renewal is available when:

  • The vehicle is currently registered to your name in the county.
  • The renewal notice was received (provides a confirmation number for the portal).
  • There's no hold on the registration (parking citations, court orders, or insurance lapse).
  • The owner of record has a valid email and credit/debit card.

The online transaction takes about 5 minutes. The new sticker is mailed in 5-10 business days. Online portals charge a small convenience fee on top of the standard renewal fee.

Mail renewal

Mail renewal is available at every county treasurer. Send the notice with payment to your county treasurer's office; the new sticker is mailed back in 1-2 weeks. Mail renewal is not available if there's a registration hold, an insurance certification dispute, or an open Use Tax balance from a recent transfer.

In-person renewal

Walk-in service at the county treasurer's office is the traditional path and is sometimes necessary — when a hold needs to be cleared, when a transfer requires a new title, or when the registered owner has died and the title is being processed through probate. Bring proof of Iowa insurance, the renewal notice or current registration card, and a valid Iowa driver's license.

Fees

Iowa annual registration fees combine a percentage of the vehicle's original list price with a weight-based component:

  • Year 1: 1% of list price plus 40 cents per 100 pounds.
  • Years 2-7: declining percentage, ending at 0.5% of list price for year 7+.
  • Years 8+: primarily weight-based with a small list-price residual.
  • Older vehicles (12+ years): a flat fee of $35-$60 depending on weight.

Specialty plates carry an additional annual fee. Custom characters add another fee on top of the specialty design. Heavier vehicles (large SUVs, trucks) pay more than smaller cars.

Plate transfer to a different vehicle

Iowa plates stay with the registered owner, not the vehicle. When you sell a car, you typically remove the plates and either:

  • Transfer them to your next vehicle at the county treasurer's office.
  • Surrender them for the credit of any unused registration months.
  • Hold them on a personal-property basis until your next purchase.

Plate transfer to a new vehicle requires payment of any registration fee differential and is processed at the same time as the title transfer for the new car.

Holds that block renewal

The county treasurer cannot process a renewal until the following are resolved:

  • Unpaid Iowa parking citations submitted to the treasurer.
  • Unpaid property taxes on the vehicle (Iowa property-tax model for some specialty vehicles).
  • An open insurance lapse reported by the carrier.
  • An open registration suspension on the vehicle (e.g., a salvage flag without inspection).
  • An unresolved Use Tax balance from a recent transfer.

Resolving a hold typically requires contacting the originating agency directly — paying parking citations to the issuing city, for example — before the treasurer will release the renewal. Once cleared, online or in-person renewal usually works the next business day.
