Utah Vehicle Registration Renewal
Utah vehicle registration renews every 12 months on the anniversary of the original registration. The Tax Commission's Motor Vehicle Portal accepts most renewals online, the On the Spot program lets emissions stations renew on the same visit as the test, and registration kiosks at participating partner offices print a new sticker in minutes.
Renewal notice timing
The Tax Commission mails a registration renewal notice to the address on the most recent application, typically 60 days before expiration. The notice lists the registration number, the next due date, the emissions inspection requirement (if any), and the total amount owed including the age-based Uniform Fee. If the address on the registration is out of date, the notice may not arrive — update the registration address through the same portal used for renewal, and check the Utah address change page for the parallel driver license update.
Online renewal
The fastest path is the Motor Vehicle Portal at the Tax Commission's website, which accepts most passenger vehicle renewals if:
- The vehicle is currently registered in Utah and not delinquent.
- The required emissions inspection (in counties that mandate one) is on file electronically.
- The vehicle is not flagged for a safety inspection requirement (typical only for commercial vehicles or recent out-of-state titles).
- The owner does not have an unpaid sales tax balance, returned check, or insurance verification flag.
Online renewal accepts credit card, e-check, and stored bank account payment. The new registration card and decal arrive by mail in 5-10 business days; for tighter timelines, visit a DMV office or partner kiosk.
On the Spot renewal
One Utah-only convenience worth knowing: On the Spot emissions stations are authorized to complete the registration renewal at the same time as the emissions test. Drivers in Salt Lake, Davis, Weber, Utah, Cache, and Box Elder counties can pick a participating station, hand over the registration notice and an updated insurance ID, and leave with a fresh sticker on the plate. The station charges a small administrative fee on top of the standard registration cost, but the trade-off saves a separate trip to a DMV branch.
Kiosks and partner offices
The Tax Commission has expanded its partner-office network significantly over the last decade, with registration counters available at many county treasurers and county clerks (especially in the southern counties where the nearest state DMV branch is hours away). Self-service kiosks have started appearing at participating grocery stores along the Wasatch Front; they print a new registration card and sticker the same way DMV NOW kiosks do in California. Confirm coverage by ZIP code on the official Utah DMV site before driving out.
Emissions and inspection prep
Renewal in an emissions county is gated by a current emissions certificate. The certificate is electronically reported to the Tax Commission, so once a vehicle passes, the renewal goes through online or in person without the driver carrying paperwork. Vehicles 1968 and newer are subject to the test in the six emissions counties. Vehicles less than 6 years old in some counties qualify for a 2-year inspection cycle. Annual statewide safety inspection has been phased out for most non-commercial passenger vehicles.
Late renewal and grace period
Utah does not extend a formal grace period after expiration — the registration is delinquent on the day after the due date. Driving on an expired registration is a citable offense, and the late renewal applies a penalty fee in addition to the Uniform Fee. The Uniform Fee itself is prorated from the original due date, so renewing 60 days late still pays the full annual fee for that vehicle's age category.
Insurance verification
The Tax Commission cross-checks active insurance through the state's Uninsured Motorist Identification Database before each renewal. Drivers whose policy has lapsed will be unable to complete renewal until the database shows valid 25/65/15 liability with PIP. The database lag can be 24-72 hours after a policy is reinstated, so plan ahead if you have just renewed a lapsed policy.
Selling or moving out of state
If the vehicle is sold during the registration period, Utah does not refund the prorated Uniform Fee, but the buyer gets credit for the existing registration through the next renewal date. If the owner moves out of state, the plates can be returned by mail to the Tax Commission with a written notice, which closes the registration record and prevents future renewal notices from arriving at an old Utah address. See the title transfer page for the corresponding ownership-change steps.
